Neat Trick: Dollar Bill Ruler

6-10-08-dollar.jpg

Our favorite pocket-sized measuring tape busted a gut a while back and we had to toss it. We feel naked without it but keep forgetting to snatch up a replacement. Lucky for us, we have a secret trick in our back pocket (literally) that comes in real handy...

This may not be news to you savvy folk out in internet land (we heard this via an interview with Amy Sedaris who learned it from her postal lady), but we feel might clever with our new measuring trick. Grab that dollar bill out of your wallet (or $20 or $100 if you're lucky!) and slap that sucker down. There's your new six inch ruler. Half it and you got 3 inches, etc, etc. Go forth and measure!

Knowing the length of the spread of my fingers, from tip of thumb to tip of little finger, has been useful to me countless times, and I don't even have to take out my wallet.

Random bit: I am five foot five inches and when I push my palms together with my elbows out it is exactly three feet from elbow to elbow... I use it all the time and look like a fool every time I do. Hey whatever works for you!

I have my arm span written down in my notebook for on-the-go reference. I'm 5'8" and my arms spread wide with my forefinger and thumbed pinched together on each arm like I'm holding my vinyl tape measure (since that's what I used to measure my span, i.e., instead of fingertip to fingertip) is 64".

Like Carol in Denver, I am always using the span of my hand to measure. Very handy. ; )

I'm pretty sure that the arm spread should be equal to your height for normally proportioned people. I recall a fifth grade class exercise in this matter.

austinjohn, you mean for perfectly proportioned people, and no one's perfect :) we're all normal.

.. and for little things, it's good to know that the standard business card is 2 inches by three and a half inches.
