Deborah Needleman (also known as the former editor of Domino, but you already knew that) recently teamed up with HomeGoods to create StyleScope, an online quiz to help you get a better sense of your personal home style. After taking the quiz, I discovered that I'm an Earthy Modern. What are you?
That Deborah is one smart cookie. This Earthy Modern description fits me to a T:
You keep up with culture, style, and trends, but have an appreciation for timeless forms and simple lines. ... You value order. You feel happiest if your home is well organized. You understand that when your house is in order, your mind feels clearer.
StyleScope will also give you decorating recommendations, a palette of "your happy home colors" and suggestions on how to incorporate those colors into your home.
Go here to take the HomeGoods StyleScope quiz.

Global Casual
Your home is warm and inviting, and expresses your curiosity and zest for life. You have wide-ranging interests, and an appreciation for many different cultures and ways of life. You bring a sense of the far-flung world into your home through its décor through unique or artisan-made treasures. Objects in your home tend to reflect your personality, your passions, your values, and your eclectic interests. This gives your home a sense of intrigue and comfort.
You value creativity. You are stylish and fun loving, and can be an inspiration to others. You have a natural sense of drama, and you know you have to be willing to take risks—whether with colors, finishes, furniture choices, or ideas—for your home to stand out. Your home can be happy and lively and the place all of your friends want to be.

Totally nailed it...!
EARTHY CASUAL
You're interested in creating a welcoming home where people feel comfortable and happiness flourishes. You appreciate the warmth and individuality of natural materials and handcrafted things and are inspired by colors and forms from nature. You love mixing up different textures and are sensitive to the tactile qualities of objects. Your style is grounded and solid, not flighty or frilly. And you are never taken in by the trend of the moment.
You value serenity. While there are probably a lot of interesting things in your home, they are joined by your taste or a certain palette that keeps them in harmony. You appreciate the beauty in simple forms. Whether fancy or plain, you appreciate things that are well made and function as well as they look. You also have a strong respect for the environment and craftsmanship. You care about how things are made, and how they are used.

Dramatic Modern
You keep up with culture, style, and trends, but have a classical appreciation for beautiful forms and well-made, functional objects. You are inspired by good design and quality craftsmanship, but have a sense of the theatrical and the fun. You liven things up and infuse personality into your rooms. You like how something ornate mixes with modern, or how daring flourishes, like bold color or a wild pattern, can inject some humor and contrast to the serious, straight lines of modern pieces. You are a style leader, and your friends look to you for advice. You are not afraid of glamour. Because you embrace color, art, and elegance, your home makes a happy impact.

You have a natural sense of drama, and you know you have to be willing to take risks—whether with colors, finishes, furniture choices, or ideas—for your home to stand out. Glamorous Classic
You have a refined sensibility with an appreciation for history and tradition in your furniture and your rooms. You value beauty and craftsmanship. You are visually sensitive and understand how symmetry and a balanced layout give order to a room. But you definitely like to shake things up with some unabashed luxury and glamour to keep things from getting boring. You go for rich materials like velvets, one-of-a-kind objects, lady-like touches, glimmering accessories, and a sense of old-Hollywood romance that makes your home dramatic and elegant.

It's a wide-ranging quiz, and the recommendations at the end are great, but I think sproost is better for design styles. http://www.sproost.com/
Very few people's styles are all one type of design -sproost gives you a conglomerate of three different styles.

wow, I'm amazed at how accurate this is! I definitely identify more with my results than the other ones listed so far.
Global Modern
You keep up with culture, style, and trends but have a classical appreciation for beautiful forms, good design, and quality craftsmanship. You prefer the streamlined and a bit of breathing room to the overly embellished or cluttered. But your style is far from cold, because your aesthetic interests are wide-ranging and far-flung. You appreciate other cultures and like mixing the old or the unusual with the new and modern. Objects in your home tend to reflect your personality, your passions, your travels, and your eclectic interests–uniting to form a well-edited collection.
You value comfort. Your home is a warm and open friendly place, and you feel happiest when everyone is cared for and relaxed in your space. Elements like pillows, throws, overstuffed furniture, and good lighting set the mood. You may also enjoy layering different fabrics or mixing patterns to create a cozy effect.

This was fun and most of the descriptions for Bohemian Classic fit me. Thanks hurricanelea for the link to sproost. I think that site has more potential. How do I reconcile bohemian with 100% zen? I actually do that!

Definitely NOT the first time I've been labelled eclectic, and the description did pretty much seem to match my design style.

I'm a Bohemian Eclectic like you, widge. Let's get together in our oh so comfy and cultural homes! This quiz was pretty spot on for me. I like people to feel welcomed and comfortable in my home and have it be unique and random. My current apartment is under 300 sq. feet but there is art everywhere, a red couch, a 3 feet tall clock and a cat and a dog. Comfy, weird, but definitely cute. Sometimes I think the inside of my brain looks like a Tim Burton film.

ELEGANT CLASSIC
You have a refined sensibility with an appreciation for history and tradition in your furniture and your rooms. You value beauty, things that are well crafted, and family heirlooms. You are visually sensitive and understand how symmetry and a formal layout give order to a room, and hence your home is refined and calming. You are not taken in by the trends of the moment. You go for things with a timeless appeal, and appreciate old-fashioned virtues like manners and handwritten notes and making a home that is welcoming for others.

Rather than a lot of meaningless objects or overly-designed items, you are happier with a few well-placed things. Your home is your respite from a busy life. And the colors it picked out were all blues and pale bluish-greens and purple, which are the colors that make me happy. I just reorganized my closet and was stunned to realize that almost all my clothes are blues and bluish-greens and purple (apart from the gray and black pants/skirts)

Thanks to the person who supplied the sproost quiz! Just because I use my home one way, doesn't mean I have to decorate it according. (In the HomeGoods quiz I was "earthy casual," but that's really not my style.)
Try the sproost quiz! Thank you hurricanelea!
Modern Elegance - much more like me
Variety is the spice of life! And nowhere is this truer than in the design of your home... You either love contemporary but wish it wasn't quite so cold and austere; or perhaps you've always been drawn to more traditional rooms but are now at a point in your life where you'd like to pair down a bit or want to create a less cluttered and busy space. Transitional Style is here to marry those apparent contradicting designs. And guess what — it's the contradictions that make the mix of contemporary and traditional so successful. The result is an elegant room that appeals to young and old alike. A sofa with modern lines blends seamlessly with a pair of traditional chairs. New fabrics work so well on antique pieces. It turns out that modern art looks even more exciting above a collection of traditional pieces. The room feels simple and sophisticated, elegant and hip.

I've never expected a style such as "Boheminan ...", but it actually suit me. =)
=========================================
Bohemian classic
You have a refined sensibility and bring a sense of history and tradition into your decor. You appreciate how symmetrical arrangements and beautiful, well-crafted pieces create a solid foundation to a room. But you like to shake up this restraint with objects and accessories that express your personality and your love of other cultures. When traveling, you seek out unique objects that reflect what you love, and you use them in a sophisticated way. You want people to feel comfortable in your home, and cozy chairs, ethnic fabrics, unique pieces, and even a little touch of quirk or humor give your house a laid-back, Bohemian flair.
You value serenity. While there are probably a lot of interesting things in your home, they are joined by your taste or a certain palette that keeps them in harmony. You appreciate the beauty in simple forms. Whether fancy or plain, you appreciate things that are well made and function as well as they look. I couldn't finish the quiz. The answers just made no sense to me. Sure I might select a leather clutch, but would the designer necessarily be young? dunno. But isn't is weird that this quiz came from Homegoods?
view charlenemcbride's profile
Earthy modern for me too. I liked this better than previous quizzes with many questions that involved picking the lesser of four evils. The color palette was close - muted versions of colors I like.
view ngnerd's profile
So I took the HomeGoods quiz and the Sproost quiz. I took the HomeGoods quiz twice, the second time I choose differently on all the questions that I was torn about the first time around. The first time around (Dramatic Modern) was more accurate.
Then I took the Sproost quiz, which was only mildly helpful (the directions said "don't consider the windows or the colors when your are choosing." That's sort of hard)
For fun, I took the Sproost quiz three times...but changed the music I was listening to each time and just "followed my instincts." I got radically different results that seemed to be linked to my musical choices.
Before you judge me - it's 8:30 on a Saturday morning and it's POURING and GUSTING outside. And I'm procrastinating about painting my kitchen...
view nikkicole's profile
Maybe I should do what nikkicole did and take it again...mine wasn't really accurate ("country casual"...mentioned vintage teacups. I would NEVER arrange vintage teacups).
But then, I've always sucked at multiple choice tests.
view Britomart's profile
Nikkicole, I do not have your excuse but I did take each quiz multiple times. For the HomeGoods quiz I got Glamourous Classic every time. For the Sproost quiz, I got Vintage Modern twice and Hollywood Couture twice (100% of each, each time).
I tried to take the Sproost quiz by alternately choosing which pictures I liked and which pictures represented a place where I would want to live. I would have happily lived in all the photos which I am guessing were tagged 'vintage modern' although that is not exactly how I would define my style.
Funnily, my apartment does not in any way look glamourous, hollywood, or couture. This has always been a style I have been fascinated with but never thought I would be able to live with. Lately I have been thinking about incorporating one or two elements into my home.
I think that the results were skewed by the particular photos used in the quizzes. For example, I really like rustic elements but did not like any of the 'rustic' Sproost photos.

Rastafarian...it's actually a painting my sister made in high school as a self portrait in the vein of Paul Klee's Head of Man (http://www.123posters.com/art/k107.htm). Granted it borrows strongly from the original, but that was essentially the assignment since it wasn't actually for an art class.

My style:
Earthy Casual on Home Goods: Close, but no cigar.
Modern Elegance (57%); Contemporary (29%); Nantucket 14% on Sproost: On the money!
The Sproost quiz was more nuanced than Home Goods. The common theme running throughout is "clean, airy and uncluttered." Describes my style perfectly.

I think it's trying to tell me I'm boring. Global Casual (above) actually sounds more like our stuff. Then again, maybe I should have been calling our hand-me-downs "family heirlooms" all along.
Main beef: The colors I like in a flower bouquet (yellows/oranges) are not necessarily the colors I want on my walls. Yellow does nothing for my complexion.
Off to Sproost.

view mayabee's profile
Well it told me I was Bohemian Classic, which is fairly accurate. And it told me that my biggest challenge was getting everything to go together, which is true... Now, how do I solve this problem is my question? The color palette I'm also not sure about, I do like those colors but the dark reds and browns would overwhelm me and I'm more of a blue person. Definitely better than the Sproost quiz though, which tells me I'm French Country.

You have a naturally refined sensibility with an appreciation for tradition and history. You value beauty, craftsmanship, and family heirlooms, but you like to open things up with pretty, easy-going pieces like painted wood or distressed furniture, lovely florals and other patterns, and bunches of fresh flowers that give your home a breezy, relaxed feeling. You love unique finds, have a thrifty, creative side, and can make these things work together.
You value comfort. Your home is a warm and open friendly place, and you feel happiest when everyone is cared for and relaxed in your space.
