For several years, we drove all over the state for our job. A couple of days a week we'd set out early in the morning, coffee in the cup holder, a book on tape in the stereo. Most of the time we just tried to make it to Santa Rosa and back before we had to sit in traffic, tried to limit our hours sweltering in July in Ukiah and Fresno and Riverside. But there were also times we made the trips into mini-escapes. We took our dog with us, found parks and beaches and lagoons in Eureka, Mendocino, Santa Barbara, wandered Abbot Kinney in Venice, bought the perfect bowl in Pomona, had a good lunch in Sebastopol.

Speaking of Eureka, I was just up that way and wandered through a freaky town just south of there. You can read about it in my blog here: http://stevesbasement.blogspot.com/2007/07/scotia-california.html
Thanks!
