Bathrooms are next, and Smallest Coolest is after that

2007-2-26-smallcool.jpgCorrection to yesterday's post about our upcoming theme for March: the annual Smallest, Coolest Contest will happen this year in April.

March, starting next Monday, will actually be all about (drumroll please...) the bathroom.

Perfect timing - I want to redo a small guest bathroom in my condo. It's all original 1980 vintage. The shower is newly done, and I found a great light fixture.

But the "vanity" and ugly tile top has to go. The vanity is only 5 feet long and goes wall to wall. It's a small space.

I'm on a tight budget and was thinking about putting in a pedestal sink and freestanding shelves.

But do people put pedestal sinks in modern geust bathrooms these days? How would you do it, to make it look cool?

There are many ways to do a pedestal sink in a contemporary style. Try something with a vessel bowl. Click on my name for a link.

I would love to read an interview with a lighting expert on how to light small (even windowless) bathrooms.

Perfect timing for me, too. We bought a fixer-upper this past spring and are working our way through the things that need cosmetic upgrades. I'm going to take on the bathroom in the middle of March.

I'm also going to pull out a vanity and replace it with a pedestal. Our bathroom is miniscule (5 feet by maybe 8 feet) and there are about 1.5 inches between sides of the tub and the vanity. Hard to clean and splashed water is damaging to the vanity. We've got enough storage elsewhere to make up for any losses in that department.

I'm not so crazy about the vessel sinks. They're striking, but few years from now they'll be totally dated.
