Blu Dot Partners with Urban Outfitters for +OO Collection

061109 bludot uo1.jpgBlu Dot's designs are much loved around these parts (see the Strut table, One Night Stand sleeper sofa, and Real Good chair to name a few), so when we heard they had partnered with Urban Outfitters to create a more affordable furniture line, needless to say we were very intrigued...

061109 bludot uo 2.jpgThanks and credit to Oh Joy! for spreading the news on this new collection, entitled +OO (or, "too"). So far there are three pieces, the Slider Console ($548), Easy Rider side table ($148), and In a Pinch chair ($128), all in the same pared-down-but-interesting style for which Blu Dot is known. For more information, check them out at Urban Outfitters.

UO is also not known for producing quality furnishings. I like the look of that cabinet, but $550 for a UO piece is way too much. This Blu Dot cabinet costs only a few hundred bucks more.

I saw the console in person this week. Not bad. Not bad at all...

slowdown - but it IS a Blu Dot piece...it's furniture from Blu Dot designed specifically for Urban Outfitters!

Looks cool, and it might be perfect for storing LPs,
but $550 for particleboard?

Please.

Someone with rudimentary carpentry skills could make that thing.

Yes, but it is made "in collaboration" with the Blu Dot designers. I wonder where it is constructed and assembled. The UO website says it's imported, which makes me think: China.

If you're going to buy something with the Blu Dot name, might as well go with a piece specifically from them.

I wouldn't buy either piece, as both are made of veneer.

I have to agree the console is far too expensive for what it is. When I saw it I was thinking $300 at most. However, I would like to see it in person before I could say for sure.

i'll second (third, or fifth) the $500 for a particleboard/veneer piece is way out of line.

I wish Blu Dot had chosen a better company to partner with. I haven't purchased anything from UO ever since I found out that their founder and president, Richard Hayne, is a right-wing douchebag who donated thousands of dollars to conservative nut, Rick Santorum, over the years.

Looks like an IKEA Hack to me...

"I wish Blu Dot had chosen a better company to partner with."

I have to agree - Seems like WestElm would have been a more appropriate venue?

How is this in any way affordable? UO already prices their knock off, low quality furnishings too high. If you want to get something at UO for cheap pick up a copy of the Readymade book they sell there for under $35 and learn to make cooler one of a kind projects for under 100$.

Considering UO targets the relatively low-income college crowd, I doubt it'll be moving many of these consoles.

@ cedric: agree with you 100 percent.

@ rosenatti: I find UO pretty expensive, especially their clothes. I'm professionally employed and have been out of school for quite some time, and even I cringe at their prices.

Yet, I see college students buying up a storm there, especially the clothing. Don't know where they get the money. Perhaps they just include it as part of their student loans that they'll repay once they get out of college.

The description of the cabinet on UO's site proclaims that the "top offers a smooth, flat surface." Um, well, yeah, it's a cabinet. Aren't you scraping the barrel a little bit if you have to include that in the plug?

Seaside - I agree. We all don't agree on politics. The CEO contributed money to Democrats. He's an openly gay man and doesn't have a problem working there. Anyway, I think $550 is a little pricey also. It is cute though.
