June is Outdoor Home Month

2007_06_18_news.jpgHas summer vacation started yet? Even though it's been years and years since we've been on an academic calendar, right around now we still start to feel the annual tug: for long, unstructured days, meals on an oilcloth-covered table on the porch, and flip-flops in place of shoes, no matter where we go.

While the San Francisco plays its usual June games we're keeping the summer vacation embers glowing by blogging the Outdoor Home theme all month. If you've got an Outdoor Home tip, question, or an image of your outdoor paradise to share with AT:SF, be in touch.

If you have a typically small city yard AND you have dogs you'd probably given up on having a nice untrampled flower border. Don't despair. I built this attractive and very modern and green dog barrier for less than $20. This is the first year in the 15 I've lived here that I could grow my fantasy perennial border. This simple and attractive fence is just discouraging enough to make the dogs (2 large German Shepherds) avoid walking through or peeing on the flowers. The picture speaks for itself.

It's made of redwood lath, 3 foot pieces of steel rebar and copper wire. No nails, no fasteners and the only tools: a wood saw a drill and a pair of wire cutters. All materials available at home depot for less than $20. Construction time a liesurely 2 hours on a sunny Satuday.
