Here we are thinking this is a dog town, but maybe it's actually a ferret town. Or a red-eyed tree frog town. Let us know!

Last night the firealarm in my buiding went off. After I got dressed and ready to get out I tried to find my cats (or atleast one to save), but they were hiding. In a small studio you think you would beable to find them.
It's sad to think in case of a real fire they are on their own.
I wish they could be trained to run to the door at the sound of the alarm.
1 cat, 1 dog.
1 cat, 1 tarantula
Heidi - at a former workplace we had a rep from the fire dept come and give a talk. Her comment was that we should not stick around and search for our pets in a fire, they are not searching for us. Often times the pet has already found its way out of the building while the owner ("guardian" if you live in Berkeley) is still inside searching.
I don't know that I could follow her advice if the situation occurred, but it made me think. I would be very, very sad to lose my cat that way, but I would be devastated to lose my husband if he stuck around to find her.
Heidi, in a small studio there are probably limited places for cats to hide and they tend to go to the same one(s) when they're frightened. I've learned that when visitors come, my cat heads for the back of the closet or the open cat carrier (don't ask; I have no storage). My mother's cats hide underneath beds. Keep those hiding places in mind in case of an emergency.
You can send for a FREE emergency pet rescue sticker at the ASPCA website. It's an easy way to alert people that pets are inside your home in the event of an emergency. http://www.aspca.org/site/PageServer?pagename=pets_rescuesticker
