Northwest #33: Supriya and Sidd's Splash of Color

What inspired you to use color? While it is true that colors inspire our moods, in our case it is equally true that our moods inspire the colors. The same color feels sad or happy depending on how we're feeling. This is our starter home and our first attempt at decorating, but money was tight when we first moved here. Our wallets pretty much dictated the furniture we bought. We do not have permission to paint the walls either, so accessories were the only thing we could use to splash color...

...It's also true that we played it safe more often than not because in our minds we lack the experience to make a bold design or color call. But we learn something new each day, and our home is evolving even now and we constantly keep changing something so that it feels different all the time. I don't think we'll ever reach a stage when our home will be completely done. For us, it will always be a work in progress. And that gives us something to look forward to!

Color Tip: More often than not, my husband and my tastes are diametrically opposite. And we are equally likely to change our minds the next day and start hating what we liked earlier. We like to keep changing the way our home looks fairly often. Given this, the cheaper and simpler way to decorate is to change the accessories and accent pieces in the home. If you get tired of something, don't get rid of it yet. Keept it. You might be in the mood to bring it out again a few months later. Oh and yes, white is a color. In fact it is supposed to be the color that encompasses the entire rainbow!

Where's the color?

With the exception of a tablecloth, a bedspread, a couple pieces of art and some fridge magnets - Everything is grey, white or beige...
...not very inspirational I'm afraid.

Nice home, but I don't see the colour. In fact I find that many of this year's entries are devoid of any real colour at all. Strange.

It seems a bit of a stretch when refrigerator magnets are included as color. This place feels pretty cold to me. I do like the bedspread though.

i'm assuming you aren't allowed to paint b/c it's a rental. if so, i suggest adding some large pieces of art. something like those tiny ones, but 5 feet long would really help. grab some soft punchy blankets for the couch. swap that rug for something with solid color.

it is a nice place though.

I'm serious about the white! I'm at the point where I'm just going to randomly pick a white and get it in a gloss, hope it isn't beigey and be done with it!

I do want that white though.

Nicely kept home. Ikea pieces used to good effect. However, no color!
Suggestions: Use brightly colored cushions. I can see you are Indian, so you could perhaps get some colorful stuff from there during your next visit.
White sofas are nice, but a colorful throw will add life and remove the 'oh so ikea' look.
The rug looks dull, something brighter might be nicer.
Add more art work, larger ones. If you don't want to drill, you could just use an easel.
Is that a pooja table in the bedroom? Maybe you can spice it up by painting it some auspicious color like turmeric yellow or vermillion red. Else, just go with any color you like.

Living room furniture arrangement is good though :)

I think it's refreshing to see a rental apartment with beige walls and floors - just like mine! I'd love to paint, but can't, and I like to see what others do with their beige spaces.

Screw the pillows - get some colorful Ikea slipcovers. Its a great (safe) way to start using color. Once you see how powerful a big piece can be in color it will influence some of the other decisions you make in the rooms.

Some curtains in the livingroom can also provide more drama and depth. Even Ikea makes some sateen curtains in some jewel tones. But seriously folks- baby steps will only take you short distances. You need to take the color and run with it.

Oh... and no soup for you! for using the silly argument that "white is all the colors in the rainbow".
