Northwest #7: Rachel's Warm, Rich Colors

fallcolors1.jpgName: Rachel
Location: Oakland, CA
Type of Home: Rented house
What inspired you to use color? The moment we moved into our rental 3 months ago, I knew we had to do something about the stark white walls, which were cold and impersonal. Luckily, our landlords trusted us to select an appropriate color palette...

...By taking cues from the Mediterranean architectural style of the house and regional color influences, we brought in a palette of warm, rich tones to infuse the rooms with energy. Each space is uniquely-defined based on its function and desired mood, while still retaining a sense of cohesion and flow from one room to the next.

Color Tip: Color is all about context. You must consider the environment carefully - lighting (both natural and artificial), size of space, architectural details, how it relates to other existing colors, contrast (balance of darks and lights, warms and cools), proportions of colors, desired atmosphere, the needs/tastes of those using the space and many, many other factors.

Colors Used: Benjamin Moore Aura paint: Tuscon Red, Bryant Gold, Amber, Golden Grooves

The colors here are great - but Rachel has a significant issue with scale in her Living Room...
...that little Purple Tulsta Chair from IKEA is absolutely DWARFED by that massive sage green Chair-and-a-Half and matching Sofa. It really doesn't need to be there at all.

She desperately needs some end tables and lighting in that room too as well as a more substantial coffee table.

Charming. I for one love the pop of purple in the living room. And there is no need to fill the room with more tables or a larger coffee table.

it's true, the purple chair is just there temporarily while we hunt for new furniture... a work in progress!

i think most of us are actually a work in progress and you can be proud of what you have accomplished. beautiful colors and it must have been a lot of work, a lot of "cutting in". well done!

i like a few things about this even though it's not my style. 1) i can tell you actually thought about it. 2) it's nice to see someone make a huge impact while still keeping a budget. 3) THE WINDOWS IN YOUR KITCHEN!!! drool

I understand it's a rented home, but kitchen needs to be lightened up. If you can't paint the cabinets, perhaps you could have used a lighter, warmer shade of yellow. That shade look somewhat dead in the photo (but that may be the lighting).
