apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

I recently had surgery, but have recovered. Now I own a great deal of occupational therapy/mobility aids for my home (shower stool, an over toilet frame.)
How do I dispose of these now that I'm done with them? My garbage company charges for extra pick ups (we've already used our free pick ups.)
Could I donate these to someone in need? If so, is it even sanitary?

After my dad passed away, we reached out to a local DC charity that works to house victims of elder abuse, and they were delighted to take such items. We washed them down with bleach and then dropped them off. Perhaps a similar organization in SF would be interested?

I think charity orgs are a better bet but, when I had difficulty getting rid of the last few, I also used craigslist and freecycle.

If you are in San Francisco proper, Sunset Scavenger (the local garbage company) will do up to 4 large item pickups per year free. If you do want to throw away, they'll take it.

If that's not an option consider ecohaul (http://www.ecohaul.com/) - they will pick up your junk then sort through it to see if any charities want it
