Rationell Variera Spice Rack from IKEA

4-14-08-spicerack.jpg

IKEA really shines when it comes to small storage like this. And though we love the look of uniform containers and clever magnetized designs, we're not keen on transferring our spices to new containers (and where do we store the inevitable leftovers that don't fit? No).

These were on display at the IKEA near Seattle, but completely out-of-stock. Fortunately a very helpful salesperson offered to de-mount and sell them to us, the only trade-off being that we had to melt off the little plastic ID tag with boiling water when we got home. And IKEA doesn't do discounts for floor models.

We wouldn't have gone to the trouble, except we loved how the clear rack allows us to see the full labels on our spice jars, without a wooden bar or something in the way. We mounted them above the stove and were slightly worried about the plastic melting, but we've been cooking with it there for about a week, and no problems so far.

$5.99 here.

Ah, but keeping spices above the stove isn't so good-- the heat isn't ideal. Better to store them in a pantry-type place if you can, or at least somewhere cool...

I'm with you ... should spices be that close to the heat?
Cool rack though.

Does anyone else know of a similar rack?
I live in a state that doesn't have ikea, and I've been looking for a good solution for my spices.

Actually, this might be helpful in my bathroom closet, holding some prescription & med bottles, hmmm...

I would be afraid of the spice rack melting when the stove burners are in use.

THE worst place to keep your spices is above or next the stove.

Attractive rack, but the jars would all have to be taller than the front side of the rack or you wouldn't be able to retrieve them easily. For example, the eye dropper in the first photo and the two short containers in the second photo would be clumsy to retrieve especially at the height of the shelves pictured - not to mention reaching over the stove, where spices definitely don't belong and you wouldn't want to be reaching.

Those look like a bitch to clean. The grease from the stove on the outside of the bins, the remnants of spices in the crevices on the inside...

It would work well for a wall Dump Pile (instead of the dining table or the counter!) near the entrance or something, for letters, newspaper, magazines, whatever else. One for each person! :-)

I agree with others. The heat isn't good for the spices. The cleaning will be very hard too.

I have these spice racks, also from Ikea, mounted on the wall above the counter top I most frequently mix/chop things on. My dad lacquered them for me (he has strange hobbies, lacquering is only one of them) so they're shiny and bright red and navy. I'm a little obsessive about things matching, so each bottle is wrapped with white contact paper (except for a stripe at the back so I can see how much is left) and has a label-machine label at the bottom so I can see what each item is.
They come off the wall for easy cleaning and I ♥ them. So pretty and functional.

and no, I don't alphabetize my spices.......... I sort them according to use (baking spices, herbs, ethnic spices, etc)

I give this two weeks before the grease and gunk and dust starts building up on that clear plastic...

I love these comments. I thought this looked pretty neat at first till I thought about how impractical it could after reading.

FYI — I cooked a 45-minute, three-burner meal (using both back burners) with this setup this afternoon, and the rack didn't even get warm. It may be difficult to see from the picture, but the rack is nearly 1 foot behind and 6 inches above the nearest heating element.

It may be one of those things that look questionable (again, we did have qualms when we installed it), but are surprisingly innocuous.

I'll be monitoring the grease/flammability/spice freshness situation as I enjoy the convenience and free space on my shelves!

I second the bathroom idea - I dont have room for any shelves or a medicine cabinet in my bathroom so I recently purchased an Ikea wall-mounted office organizer to keep my things in. Just enough room for toothbrush, toothpaste, lotion and face wash. That's all I need!

I think these would have worked for me back when I was looking for spice racks to go inside my pantry closet. Too late.

FYI: For everybody planning to use this in your bathroom, it's a really bad idea to store meds in the bathroom. Most degrade around moisture and aren't supposed to be subject to temperatures above 70 (bathrooms get a lot hotter than this when you shower). It's a better idea to keep them in the bedroom, then you can take the pills right before you go to bed/right after you wake up.

Those would be encased in a half inch of grease at my house after an hour.
