apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Shoe Trays

9-30-08 no shoes sign.jpgWhile walking through our fair city, we're often impressed by the beauty... and with a wafting aroma or passing glance, we're just as often reminded of the funk. When we come home, we'd rather not track the remains from our walk in the Tenderloin through our apartment, but we'd also not like a giant pile of shoes at our front door greeting guests.

9-30-08 pebble tray.jpgWe'd like a good looking option for a place to leave a few pairs of shoes by the front door. This tip for a pebble tray would be great, perhaps if it was a bit longer (like this option from Smith & Hawken) to accomodate a few more pairs. 9-30-08 shoe tray.jpegAny other options for organizing shoes at the front door? We usually keep them lined up, but it always seems to end up getting pretty cluttered. Suggestions?

I've been scoping for a boot tray, too.

C'mon people, post some links!

I bought an ikea shelf, attached doors to it and use that as a shoe rack. Makes all shoes disappear easily. Most of my friends/guests know to put them inside when they come in. If not, I quickly shove them in. I really dislike shoes lying around outside cluttering up my space no matter how pretty they are.

Don't have any great advice for boot trays, but I have started to keep my shoes in their boxes in my closet and then carrying the box to the door, and then back again when I get home. It's not exactly brain surgery level creativity here, and you have to be disciplined (which I'm not always), but it's a solution. I just didn't want yet another thing to have near my door, which is right as you walk in my living room.

I bought a 3 shelf glass bookshelf from work and then realized I didn't really have a place to put it (it was $5). It wasn't until I realized that my shoes were piling up that I figured I could use the bookshelf in my outside hallway. Right now the shoes are just lined up but I'd like to get some baskets for the less used shoes (I have like no closet space in my studio to keep them in the apt). It actually looks pretty good.
