The Winescape by Paul Allen

Those of us who live in small homes know that storage is a precious thing. Often there's wall space where there's not floor or cupboard space, and in that case, the Winescape (featured in our Best Wine Racks) is perfect for storing up to 18 bottles of Two Buck Chuck.

The Winescape is available in six naturally colored exotic hardwoods, and in either a level or angled design (see the angled racks here).

The design is deceptively simple. In reality the spacing is exact, the holes aren't cut straight, the mounts are hidden, and the screws are rated for 400 pounds each. (Many customers say "I tried to make one of these and I give up.")

You know, this could be something someone with a large enough drill bit and some trial and error could do a knock-off of.... Plus, then you could paint or stain it to match your place!

Gus Modern does a very similar wine holder in acrylic. I think it looks a lot slicker and nicer than wood version.

I continue to see all these decorative wine holders, but I'm left wondering about form and function. It's well-known that light and heat are bad for wine, even $2 wine. I'd rather just store my wine in a liquor box in the (cool, dark) coat closet.

It just strikes me that people are using these holders to show off their wine; I'd rather hide mine and enjoy it when I open it. And I'm hardly a wine snob!

Man, I've wanted a wine rack like this ever since I saw that arcrylic one on better living through design. I don't know why it never occured to me that I could just drill some holes through a 2x4.

We saw this before and tried to make one. It didn't really work out like we thought. Stores didn't have drill bits as big as we needed. The one we finally got took a long time to go through and would make burn marks. It would have given it character I guess but everything was crooked and just looked awful. Atleast it was cheapo wood. Maybe if one of us were math majors? LOL. We also saw that acrylic one but it's a little too euro for what we have.
