...Now that I'm back home I'd like to buy a couple for our little patio. I've looked around online (ebay, craigslist, google) and can't find anything in my small budget. There are plenty of folding chairs with armrests but nothing like the Hyde Park chairs - wood frames with no arm rests. The V&A has this in their store, but it's a bit pricey for me given the exchange rate and shipping. I'd be delighted to find the frames alone and then sort out the fabric myself. Has anyone seen these chairs elsewhere?
Best, Portia
Portia, we empathize completely — on our recent vacation to Mexico, we also had the pleasure of sitting in a chair like this, and immediately embarked on a search for our own. But also like you, we found it difficult to locate these exact chairs stateside.
The chairs in Hyde Park are deckchairs, deck referring not to a backyard porch, but to the deck of a ship. Ever heard the idiom "rearranging the deckchairs on the Titanic"? That would be these.
While your criteria specified armless and available in the states, the closest we've found is this version with arms at Target, for $60. We've also found that searching for "sling chair" yields a few more results.
Can anyone else help?

Addison Antique in Palo Alto has a really nice vintage one for sale. They also have a cute little folding stool that sort of matches if you like mismatched stripes.
You could call for price 650-328-1540

Those chairs were very popular here in Brazil during the 80's. They were mostly beach chairs, but we actually had a couple of those at home when I was little. This really reminds me of my childhood... :D
I haven't seen them for a while, so maybe they're making a comeback.

Don't know if you're an ebayer, but this is the lowest price around. Granted, it does say red stripe on it so that might be a turn off for you.

You've probably seen this already, but a seller has this pair (and several others) on ebay:

The seller is in Australia - shipping cost alert! - but the chairs are reasonably priced and reasonably attractive. Good luck! I love those chairs too!

Not inexpensive, but they are nice. I used to have a couple of them. They lasted several years, with a lot of use.

We brits refer to these as "deck chairs." And I noticed when I was in Bed Bath and Beyond the other day that they are selling them, tho sadly, sans stripes. And more sadly, I don't see them on their website.
Here are some others, tho - not cheap:

REI has a more mod-looking armless version called the "Lafuma Transatube Fun Chair"

As a Brit I feel your pain. These chairs are so so so cheap in the UK and so so common (they're practically a summer staple) yet over here finding them is impossible (cheaply anyhow) Sling chairs is definitely a better search term over here (try deck chair/beach chair) but do try the UK Ebay as they aren't (or at least shouldn't be) very expensive. Good Luck.

Thank you for all of your suggestions! I was beginning to think that I should have bought a few at B & Q and hauled them back to CA. I'm relieved to see that there are other options...even if it'll cost me a bit more to get them here.

Yes, they're deck chairs, but on a bit of a side note --forgive the historian in me!-- the actual deck chairs on the Titanic's were full reclining chairs, made of teak & rattan. Gorgeous, incidentally.

BINGO!!!!
And you won't believe where I found it.
Safeway. Westlake shopping center (in Daly City). On top of the frozen foods cases.
No, I'm not kidding.
White painted wood, with a turquoise (blue green) sling. Has a head or neck pad cushion thing. Can't tell if it's attached.
$39.99 for non-members
$31.99 for members
The number that was on the sign below the chair is
79300437
311
Yes, the 311 was down a line, but probably part of the same sku or upc. I couldn't get up there and there were none on the floor. They call it both a "lounge chair" and a "beach chair".
Anyone can sign up to be a member and get the Club Card savings.
They had two. Just two up there. They probably come in a box, and they probably have more in the back. Not ALL Safeway stores will have them. Just larger ones.
During summer months, they often have some kind of deck, pool, patio furniture. This year it's that chair, a folding white table to go with.
There is a cute wood bistro set, small, good for balconies. Oh, and that "rolls up into a bag" table thing. With the wood slats.
No, it's not online, sometimes in summer they have that stuff online. I don't see it. But do check out www.safeway.com to see the names of the same chain that might be in your area, like Von's or Randall's.
