Five Fancy and Fun Outdoor Lounging Options

Sometimes it's fun to imagine what kind of crazy outdoor furniture we'd invest in if we had a fancy tricked-out backyard, complete with pool and hot tub and outdoor kitchen. But there's a lot of high-end outdoor furniture out there, and a lot of it looks exactly like the cheap stuff. Teak dining sets, or wicker chairs with green-and-white-striped cushions, or sleek chrome chaises with mesh stretched over the frame. A lot of it's kind of blah, as far as we're concerned. So we went looking for some funky but practical high-end options that don't remind us of every hotel poolside on the block...

Even if our budget did accommodate these crazy seats, we're not sure we could pull any of them off, style-wise... nevertheless, they're cool designs, and we'd happily while away a sunny afternoon in any one of them. Here they are, from left to right:

1 The 1900 Hanging Chair from Fermob is an elegant, feminine choice. It comes in several colors of hand-forged lacquered steel from Unica Home.

2 We're big fans of the Fatboy, and this outdoor version, coated in heavy UV-and-water-resistant nylon, would be fantastic for lounging by the pool or on the lawn. Design Public carries it.

3 The Sling by Ting, made of reclaimed seatbelts, is eco-friendly luxury at its best. Ting is known for emphasizing sustainability in both its manufacturing and its materials. The hammock is available from Branch Home.

4 These concrete loungers at our favorite local nursery, Flora Grubb Gardens, have become a permanent fixture in the store. It's rare that they aren't occupied by a couple sipping coffee in the sun. They soak up the rays, but not to the point of discomfort, so that when you lie down on them on a nice day, they're always pleasantly warm—perfect for our sunny-but-cool summer afternoons in SF.

5 This Philippe Starck design, the Bubble Club Armchair, is playful but stylish, perfect for a minimalist, contemporary outdoor space. Check it out at Design Within Reach.

That pink swing is easily the best thing listed here.

How is buying brand new nylon seatbelt webbing and making it into a hammock any more or less "green" than buying brand new nylon rope and making it into a hammock?

It says it is make of reclaimed seatbelts, not brand new bought seat belt webbing.

The website says this nylon webbing has never been used and is in fact brand new. So from where was it reclaimed? The store?

I love the first hanging chair. I've gotta say that the Fatboy looks like it would probably be really comfortable, but it is also the most hideous outdoor chair I have ever seen.

Actually the website says it is end-of-the line webbing destined for the landfill...
