apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Lace Fence by Demakersvan

3-23-09 lace fence 1.jpgWe might be a little late on this, but Dutch design house Demakersvan's lace fence is too cool to not feature. Design that aims to beautify the mundane or outright ugly is always a good thing, and we can think of few functional items more worthy of an upgrade than the chain-link fence...

3-23-09 lace fence 2.jpgWe'd love to see this replace the bleak balcony railings seen at some of the more utilitarian apartment buildings in the city, or painted in a bright color and used around a school playground instead of the usual chain-link fence. What do you think of Demakersvan's Lace Fence?

It's way much better than the "lace" sink strainer shown here a few months ago.

Wow! What a cool idea to brighten up something that is usually drab and not worth mentioning.

I love it! I wonder how long this would take and if it's something I could do.

I'm going to be teaching full time in a few years and I can see myself taking on this project at my new school.

I generally hate chain link fences with a passion, but in a situation where they are needed this is certainly a great way to go. I love the idea of painting it bright for a school, and it's very striking en masse on that building.

I just LOVE this idea!

Having installed a chain link fence, I also admire the hand strength and dexterity the artist must have, unless he switched to some other kind of wire for the lacework. Yikes!

I need an outdoor enclosure for cats and rabbits that is escape-proof, and most fencing other than chain link is too widely spaced -- they can push their way through. This would be an attractive solution! It would enhance the landscape rather than undermine it.

that is such a lovely idea. chain link fences are in general a real eyesore.

I would have never thought that I would find a fence to be beautiful.

sadly, i'll bet this costs substantially more than your standard chain link fence. if that's the case, then this does nothing to improve the solution to the problem the chain link fence was designed to solve. ugly chain link fences will still be used wherever people need convenient/inexpensive security - let's see someone make something beautiful AND useful and i'll be impressed!

I love it --it really dresses up the cement-y building.
