Colorful Storage Spaces

Want to take a small step in painting a room in a dark color? We've been thinking about it lately and think we may take our first step with a storage space. Here are a few to help give you an idea of what we're talking about...

Some things that concern us:

  • Will clothing colors be affected when choosing them from a high-color closet?
  • Will food storage appear as organized and appealing in a colored pantry as in a neutral one?
  • Will closets be darker, requiring us to install a light fixture in order to find anything?

Do any of you guys have dark-painted storage spaces? If so, how do you like them?

Numbers 2, 3 and 4 are like my dream pantry, shoe and craft closets!

I painted my two closets hot pink with silver trim & I love them! I live in Portland, Oregon, so I find that the pop of hot pink is very welcome during the gray season. Also, it's a color that I love but would never use in large amounts or in a highly visible place - a closet-sized amount of it is perfect for me. Any clothing color distortion isn't a problem for me, because I tend to already have a pretty good idea of what the clothes look like when they're not against a hot pink background.

I have a comment about the picture--who has that few clothes hanging in their closet?

Presumably someone who'd just painted it and then hung a few things up in order to take a picture.

Maybe that's a guest room? I think for a guest closet, a bright color would be totally fun.

This is a thought that concerns anyone?

Not in my world.

My linen closet is a bright yellow orange. I would never paint any wall that color. At the time I was just so drawn to that color, that the only way I could live with it, would be in a closet and one that isn't even opened that much.
It's always a little surprise, as the rest of the house it pretty neutral.

I love this idea and I've used it in my own home but with wallpaper...but in regards to picture #3 I am looked for an inexpensive rug like that, something that is not too heavy, I love the wide and narrow stripes...it reminds me of the beach towels my grandma used to throw on the porch for us to sit on so our bottoms would not get too hot. Does anyone know where I could find a rug like this?

We painted a small built-in bookcase a saturated, bright, warm yellow (BM mellow yellow) and at first it looked like too much and we assumed we'd have to repaint. But once we put the books (and some of my pottery) on the shelves, it looked fantastic, so different from the big chunk of YELLOW that overwhelmed the space with out the stuff to break it up. We're so glad we kept it--it's fun, beautiful next to the wall color, brings in a color from our kitchen, etc.
