Last night we saw a commercial for Point 'n Paint. We tend to be wary of spokespeople who yell and products that seem too good to be true, but it did catch our attention since we're about to do some painting of our own. If we can really paint an entire room in less than an hour, with no prep, no drips, no brush strokes, we're sold. Can it be true?

Interesting - but I have a feeling it may sadly be too good to be true. I couldn't imagine painting a room without prepping first.

Two summer jobs as a painter tells me no. But word of advice, especially about the prep: you waste a lot of time taping off windows and stuff when you can just carefully trim them. (Even with tape you risk paint bleeding through). The only time I use tape is as a splatter guard on the baseboard when rolling. Skip the tape.

Not this exact product but something similar - I bought a thing to paint corners at the paint store - useless it was - kept falling off the handle and was no better or faster than a good brush for corners. I do spend money on good rollers and brushes but these other gimmicks are useless.

this looks like an updated version of the original sponge painting kit that sold in the 80's (which is great for some areas, corners....I use sponges along with a roller when I paint). It is a bit faster and I use sponges for touch ups too. THe only problem with the sponge is that it doesn't glide across old walls very well and can really exhaust your arms. I wouldn't decide on either/or with this, use whatever tool for each area. I still use a brush for tight corners... old skool, tried and true!

I agree with empirewaste. My dad is professional painter and I worked with him for many, many summers. He would be all over this if something like this actually worked.
Also, I agree with empirewaste about taping. Just take your time when cutting in. It is actually faster.

I haven't used or seen this product before, but I did find a miracle with the Shur-Line paint pad edger when I recently painted my bedroom. The edger was so fantastic that I did not have to do any prep. It painted a crisp edge around a fireplace, crown moulding, baseboards, light switches and outlets, and window and door trim with no tape needed at all. I had edged the whole room in less than an hour and was ready to roll on the rest of the paint.
As blown away as I was by that tool (and I will NEVER tape another room again), I can't imagine having finished the whole room, walls and all, in less than an hour. That part seems too good to be true.

looks cool, but how does it work?

sometimes i just want to buy these products for kicks, even though i know they probably won't work. maybe you could trick more people into helping you paint if they got to play with toys at the same time...

The edgers that can handle a long handle are HEAVEN.

Great site Krissstin ,thank you .

I use a mini roller for cutting in. The roller has a plastic nub on one end and acts a spacer around moulding. I also trim the nap down to nothing at the edge so that there's no chance of smearing. Works like a charm. Saves *hours* of cutting in with a small brush.

This stuff is garbage, and has been for decades.
Was it an infomercial (1st clue), or a commerical that uses the word "REVOLUTIONARY" or "INNOVATION"? ....(or both)....
This is all unfortunate, because I've SO always wanted to wear a business suit AND paint the ceiling at the same time, like they show in those ads. (with that blank Prozac smile as well)

If it was a screaming announcer, it must have been Billy Mayes or that Sham-Wow guy. Both of them need to cut back on the caffeine.
I always hire painters. For some reason, I've always been terrible at it and end up doing so much collateral damage (i.e., broken ankle from falling off a ladder) that it's always easier and cheaper to hire someone.

As irritating as Billy Mayes is (he makes me want to throw things at the t.v.) the Mighty Putty is awesome stuff.....not the same as epoxy and you can use it on wet surfaces. I fixed a leak under my bathroom sink with that stuff while it was wet. Otherwise he needs a bark collar!
I'm very curious about this Pointnpaint thing but reluctant.....I'm waiting to see if anyone has actually used the thing as I hate painting but have some that I need to do.

I am going to try this crazy thing!!
I had luck with the hercules hooks and the mighty putty why not?
ok Ray u r right a house painter is optimum but I have checked into that and the cost will be a non-starter as I have a fairly new home that came with that awful ivory matte paint that comes off when you try to wash it. for over $100 per room I just can't do it!! My great room is 25' by something and two 11'x18' rooms I can barely afford the paint :)
I did have some luck with the Shur-line edger in the hallway but I need something quicker! Its look great from a distance but I used tape also in places and it needs touching up. You are all right about the tape What the?
With 2 toddlers and a baby I need something not too messy that I can try to do during the week-ends when my built-in babysitter is home:) I do have a huge drop cloth though..
My kitchen is 11x18 and needs redoing I used Behr paint which is highly recommended but it was super stinky, too shiny even tho its satin and uneven thanks to my being to lazy for primer:(
I have found paint that I LOVE. Dunn Edwards low sheen. Its stops smelling almost immediately, is almost flat and can still be washed. I have a bag full of paint supplies and even a sprayer my hubby has forbidden me to use inside. What's one more item LOL
Will report back when I try this thing. I've blown $20 in a casino in 5 min before so I figure its worth a shot :)

There's a website where people are posting their complaints about this product. Sounds like a scam. They're charging people $99 instead of $19.99 and not accepting returns, etc. Check it out:

Don't buy it. It doesnt work and neither does the mighty putty.

This thing has got to be a joke, but our tiny bathroom is too small for a ladder AND it has a 16' peaked (angled) ceiling, which I want to keep white. So, I can't get a ladder in, no room for scaffolding.. any other ideas besides something like this? I'm a pretty accomplished painter, but this one's got me perplexed.
