10-2-tech.jpgGot space? Here in the Bay Area, it's at a premium, so we doubt we're the only ones who get frustrated when we want to work on a DIY project but we don't have the room to do it.

Now there's a solution. TechShop opened just this past weekend. It's an open-access membership-based drop-in workshop for people who want to work on DIY projects but don't have the space, tools, or equipment. Want to make your own furniture? A lamp? Sew curtains? This is your place.

TechShop has just about anything and everything you could need for your project. Machinery and tools include milling machines and lathes, welding stations and plasma cutters, sheet metal working equipment, drill presses and band saws, industrial sewing machines, hand tools, plastic working equipment, electronics design and fabrication facilities, tubing and metal bending machines, electrical supplies, and tools.

Classes include lampmaking, networking your home or office, and heavy machine sewing.

There are daily ($30) and monthly ($100) access passes available.

What a totally awesome idea! I agree -- wish they were closer than Menlo Park -- but it's probably worth a drive down to at least check them out.

Anyone know of a place like this in Manhattan?

Dear TechShop,
Great idea. Um, but people who live in Menlo Park have big houses and apartments... and backyards. Your clientele lives about 40 minutes away... in SAN FRANCISCO. Duh!

Strangely enough, my "big Menlo Park apartment" doesn't come with a single welder or milling machine. Free laundry, yes. Powdercoating epipment, no.

Pretty interesting idea and it looks like they have quite the setup. I'd definitely check it out if I didn't already have plenty of machine shop access.
