Emergency Preparedness Kits

10-31-kit.jpgShake, rattle, and roll. You knew this post was coming today, didn't you? Our 5.6 quake was another wake-up call.

Although we were here during the '89 quake and the later El Nino flooding, we have no emergency kit, no grab-and-go bag. Last night we realized we were in a situation very similar to where we were in '89: A car with a gas tank on empty and no cash in our wallet. No bottled water, no extra batteries for our flashlight, no first aid kit...

So, join us in getting our acts together.

Here are some pre-made kits:
• American Red Cross' Ready-to-Go Emergency Preparedness Kit ($39.95)
• American Red Cross' Deluxe Emergency Preparedness Kit ($64.95)
• American Red Cross' Vintage-Style Emergency Preparedness Kit ($59.95)

I love the idea of making this a group cure-type effort! Having just finished a boatload of Red Cross classes, I have safety very much on my mind, and would be happy to participate.

I put this in the other thread, but check out quakekare.com. I put together a very comprehensive kit for not too much money.

Great post! By the way, Target has a great one in their summer section (in stores) where the floats and pool noodles (!) and beach chairs are... It's packed with 911 stuff for even the biggest boo-boos and it's only around $10. I don't do a lot of pool noodling, so I'm thinking of keeping one on hand in my trunk for the times when I'm playing tennis and get caught in my racket.

I actually had fun--in a very dorky way--putting one of these together. I liked it mostly because it involved shopping. It was like a treasure hunt. I found a snarky l.e.d. flashlight, whistle, iodine tablets to purify water, emergency blanket, small packets of dog food (my dog will be escaping Armageddon with me) and all sorts of mini personal hygeine things (the Apolcolypse is no reason for being dirty). I have $100 in singles in the bag, copies of my passport, birth certificate and other important documents, my eyeglass prescription, and a small pad and permanent ink pen (so it won't run in the rain) to leave notes on doors of loved one's homes and cars so if they aren't there they will know where I'm going (like to the public library to wait out the new ice age as in that awful movie a while back). Who says making a bomb-bag isn't fun? More fun to do it with a friend so you can keep coming up with ideas together and figure out what you really don't need since you'll have to schlep it with you to safety.

Jojo, you had me laughing with the comment about the ice movie! The timing with this is apt, as I have been thinking about this recently. Granted, I don't worry too much about earthquakes or ice ages, but if I were home during a terrorist attack, living 12 blocks from the Capitol, I'd either be obliterated or need supplies, so it makes sense... I've started putting aside gallons of spring water. I already have batteries and flashlights and a first aid kit. I like Jojo's idea for a notepad and waterproof ink, too.

Thanks for re-posting this. I've actully been working to organize a group of friends (in Oakland) to get our kits together and learn about preparedness, and I think that last night's quake will help get them involved in my effort. Thanks for the great links too!

So this latest earthquake made me think about preparedness kits again, and if it's worth it for me to invest any part of my paltry salary for one.

Sigh...

I'd hafta carry one with me EVERYWHERE, cuz last night when the quake hit, I NOWHERE near my car or my apartment.

So, now what?

I actually put one of these together after the 100th year anniversary last year, and yeah, it was sort of fun to put it together in a dorky sort of way! I'm glad to have it, even though I'm not sure how much of a help it will be in reality, if something big enough to force me out of my house comes along. . .
