Cat Tree

2006_07_12_cat-tree.jpgYou don't even need a cat to know that most cat trees are f* ugly.

All you have to do is walk down the street and peek into a few windows. They're usually covered with ugly beige carpet and placed near the window, so the cat has a view. Unfortunately that means the neighbors do, too.

But mount Everyday Studio's cat tree on a wall near your window and your neighbors will think you a collector of minimalist sculpture.

Constructed from heavy-duty steel in sophisticated colors (plus bubblegum pink), the cat tree has replaceable corrugated cardboard sides for your kitty to shred.

$75 from Velocity.

Uh... it's only 1.75" wide, so only a very skinny kitty could sit on the sidebar. (And I'm not sure how kitty will get a grip to get up and sit on steel anyway.)

Corrugated cardboard will look like crap in a matter of days (if it even provides sufficient resistance for kitty to enjoy scratching), so presumably one's taste in sculpture is the battered, barbed-wire sort.

For a post the cat will actually like, sisal is both sturdier and less tacky looking than beige carpet. There are also carpeted cat condos designed to look like trees.

$75 for corrugated cardboard scratcher that will, as Wende puts it "look like crap in a matter of days?" What a rip-off.

What part of living simply and well does expensive cardboard fall under?

I think I will let my scratchy kitty stick with paper grocery bags and shoeboxes that are put in the recycling after they lose cohesion.

In defense of Everyday Studio's products...

My husband and I just received a lucite water dish and feeding bowls from this designer. At first I thought the water dish was too tall, but then my stocky Persian cat walked right over and started drinking while standing up, rather than hunched over. Their products are beautifully and thoughtfully designed (hence the higher price tag), and since the corrugated cardboard is replaceable, this is a product that would not end up being endlessly tacky, like a carpeted cat tree covered with torn up carpet. Just my two cents (and no, I'm not affiliated with Everyday Studio in any way).

Um...no offense, but I don't get it. Where is the cat supposed to sit/stand? I thought the point of a treehouse was not just scratching, but playing, exercising, viewing, and napping. This is a $75 scratching post. Does it at least have replaceable cardboard inserts? I'm not seeing any on the website...so basically, you have to replace it when your cat has torn through it within...a month? Two months? That's a lot of cash. Also...has anyone thought about all the shredded cardboard that will end up on the floor?

I am one of those people with the fugly, tacky, beige-carpet-covered cat treehouse. Although my cats love it and get a TON of exercise on it, I guess I will take it out of the window now, lest it offend my neighbours' sensibilities. *said totally tongue-in-cheek, don't nobody get yer drawers in knots*

CLEARLY it is time to carpet a cat tree with Flor carpet tiles.

Don'cha think?

Ha ha! Yes, wende! That's brilliant!

As it stands now, I have a cheap hallway runner rolled up in the closet, which I cut pieces off of every year to cover the worn part of the treehouse.

But a Flor-covered treehouse....hmmm....
