Ceramic Pigeon Vase by Joanna Mendicino

We love animals to a fault, so it makes us sad sometimes to admit that they can be nuisances. Pigeons are often in the nuisance category of animal, with their scavenging, bedraggled urban ways, so it's nice to be able to welcome into our home, on our terms, the likeness of an animal we feel bad about disparaging.

The vase, by San Francisco artist J. Mendicino, comes in two sizes: 4 inches and 6 inches high. The pigeon features are much softened by the rounded, slightly penguin-like pose and shape, and the presence of flowers.

$45 and $60 at Three Potato Four.

Here's an interesting book on the oft-maligned pigeon that I read recently:

I have to say, those vases don't look all that much like pigeons to me.

Yah, these don't look anything like the pigeons in my hood. Maybe in the South Pole.

It says they're pigeons, but they sure look a lot like penguins! Personally, I don't like them much.

Those are early 1980s penguins. Stylized penguins of roughly that shape were done in clay, alabaster, crystal... all sorts of materials.

Would you like pigeons better if you referred to them as "feral rock doves," which the SF ones are? I always enjoyed saying "feral dove."
