Grippiks Surface Accents for Ikea

1-30-09 grippiks 1.jpgCustomizing your Ikea furniture seems to be almost a given at this point, but if you're not too handy in the DIY department or don't have much time for another project, you might want to consider Grippiks.

1-30-09 grippiks 2.jpgGrippiks is patterned film cut to fit the Ikea classics (pieces from the Billy, Expedit, Lack and Malm lines, to name a few) that's applied to the surface of the furniture. According to the website, the film attaches via "microsuction" as opposed to a adhesive, so the Grippiks can be repositioned or removed without leaving any residue. Prices are in the $10-20 range plus shipping. We must admit we're intrigued, and the patterns are pretty cute, but it seems kind of... well, lazy. Would you try Grippiks, or do you prefer a true DIY solution?

I myself prefer the DIY version of these sorts of things but for someone with no time on their hands or kids maybe I think this is a wonderful idea!!

VERY cool, but I only like one of the patterns. And not even that much.

I do love the "microsuction" aspect of it - fear of screwing it up worse than it started keeps me from going ahead with many DIY projects...

its a good idea, but none of the patterns really appeal to me... DIY is the way to go!

I think using these inside of bookcases, like the pics shown is pretty cute. I wouldn't use it on a dresser though. And in a child's room, well, my kids would have it all peeled off! It would be nice for a change to be able to finish a furniture project in less than an hour!

I like having the option of a removable product. A few years ago, I did the "full" DIY version on my dressers with decorative paper and varnish. I love the result - which is great, because it's never coming off! I'm now planning the nursery for our first child and want to do something like this to an old dresser, but know that the growing child will soon have their own tastes. It would be nice to simply peel off the old and stick on the new.

Not enough of a pattern selecton for me to think about using.

I love the idea of companies making add-ons for popular ikea products.

I have no DIY ability, so I'd be more likely to use something like this.

They seem to have just launched in November, so they will probably expand on the patterns they offer, don't you think?

Seems weird to me that there isn't a pattern in pink to match all the nearly inevitable pink in a little girl's room. Of course pink is avoidable if you have money for the cool modern stuff or you have the time to create something original. But if decorating your daughter's room isn't at the top of your list, the path of least resistance is pink and pastel. Why am I justifying pink here?! The point is, aren't these people missing a huge market by not including a kid friendly pink pattern? I would buy something to cover our ancient & battered IKEA kids table, but none of these will work in the pink/turquoise girlie confection that is my five year old daughter's room.

Why don't you use the contact form!!

http://grippiks.com/form/contact_us.html

I'm just amazed with the reactions here for a company that has only been in operation 2 months.

I remember my mother customizing our bathroom vanity with Contact paper in the 70s. This is an improvement with the removable feature. They should make a plain white version that's paintable so you can truly customize, but then change it out if you want.

What do they mean that there's enough for "two pairs of shelves"? Does one order not cover the back of a Billy?
