SF Good Questions: Miniature Wire City Landmarks?

5-22-landmarks.jpgAT:SF, I collect miniature city landmarks made out of wire, and I have two questions...

...I originally found Big Ben, the Chrysler Building and the Empire State building at Target (they are currently available now, but not online). I believe I may have all of them, but I can't be sure because they started releasing these back in the late 2004-'05 time frame and have been releasing a few at a time (but don't count my word on this).

TheHomePort used to sell them, but their website has changed. WestPortStyle sells some. There is only one seller on eBay (Swedemom); I bought the Capitol and White House from her.

My question is this: Does anyone know what other landmarks were made? I actually found the Eiffel Tower at a local gift shop. The only one I'm missing is the Sears Tower (I'd love help finding it).

Also, I have a leading ladder display shelf, which they look awesome on, but as more of the landmarks arrive, I'm having to find other places to display them on. I was wondering what you guys think of putting them on a floating shelf and do you think it would look great putting all the US landmarks on one shelf and the foreign landmarks on the other shelf? (The pictures don't do these guys justice in my opinion, they look so much better in person. As the pieces start to arrive I realize I don't have display room for some of them because they are huge, i.e., the Capitol and the White House.)

Regards,
Rick

Rick,

We don't know the answers to your question about what other landmarks were made, but sure, go for the floating shelves. We'd mix up the pieces, but that's just us. Try it, and if you don't like it, switch 'em around.

Anyone else?

I don't know what other buildings are available, but I believe I have seen these at Z Gallery also. I think it is a great thing to collect and they will look great on floating shelves. I collect ceramic buildings from Department 56. I store most until the holidays when I put displays around the house, but I do display some year round because they are really interesting. I put shelves on brackets up high around my dining room just for the purpose of displaying some. Here is a link to a photo on my flickr page so you can see what I've done and maybe it will give you some ideas. http://www.flickr.com/photos/orngcatstudio/2256218183/in/set-72157603885298176/

I agree, mix it up. Don't put them all together. Add other things with them like books, vases, other decor items, etc.

I saw these at Target this past weekend and I was really tempted to get them. I LOVE wire sculptures, but I really want a Boston landmark. I have yet to find one though.

When in Chiasso's store, I've been thinking of getting my parents one of the John Hancock here in Chicago... to put on a window sill that looks out over the actual building (they have a condo about 2 blocks south). Can't decide if that's silly or cool...

Not sure if you have it or not, but they have one that's the St. Louis Arch (gotta represent). Also, I know I have seen a few at the AIA bookstore here downtown...

OK, here's a link to their website, and it appears they don't take orders online, but rather you can fax in an order sheet.

Are you in San Francisco? I saw a Space Needle in the display window of the card shop in the Castro on Market next to Cafe Flore under what used to be Tower Records.

Spread out the pieces...or it'll all mush together, like a table full of picture frames, all hiding behind one another causing none of the photos to stand out and mean anything. Give them their place. You love them add them as trophy like items to exsiting shelves. our eyes also tend to love things in groups of 3 or 5....so on one wall you could have asymmetrical arrangment of shelves with one on each, but give them a friend on the shelf (depending how big it is)

Yeah, Dont forget the Space Needle :)

I have seen them on sale at the City Home Store here in Seattle which tells me they must be available elsewhere. They all come from the same place in China anyway! hehe.

Great collection!

Have you tried asking Target??

I'd arrange them according to their location.....Golden Gate Bridge on the left side, Empire State Building on the right, St Louis Arch in the middle........

You'll have to watch eBay for the rare and coveted vintage CN Tower (circa late 1970's) from Toronto!

Hey DMStudio,

I like that idea, but living here in Calif i get paranoid putting a shelf over the window or the doorway. The earthquake zone.
