SF Good Questions: Trays for Wheatgrass?

5-9-tray.jpgAT:SF, i am planning my wedding and we're doing wheatgrass centerpieces... we've found the perfect tray to hold the wheatgrass on the jamali garden website but we're hoping to find the same sort of thing for cheaper...we've looked at cost plus, crate & barrel, CB2 but we're at a loss. basically we want something that's fairly shallow and rectangular/square shaped...do you know where we can find something like this? we'd like to do a dark wood but we're totally open to anything as long as the shape is right! (we live in the LA/Orange County area but we're getting married in the Bay Area so we'll take tips from either place.) thnx.

I see pictures of wheatgrass in trays all the time. How do they grow them so perfectly? I tried to grow them but they look so ugly... Or are they just fake?
Are you planning to use real wheatgrass for your wedding?

What about going to a craft store and buying inexpensive shadowbox-style frames? If you got something that was two or three inches deep you should be able to put enough soil in it to grow wheatgrass. Good luck!

I just bought something similar for about $15 down in the flower district here in NYC. Maybe you have a whole sale flower district in SF where they sell containers...

I would get inexpensive, shallow boxes ( like heavy gift boxes, dollar/craft store) and cover them outside with material of your choice: seagrass or woodgrain wallpaper, fabric like burlap etc if you want a natural look-even woodgrain mac-tac...line the inside with plastic before putting in the soil, and trim the plastic to the edge of the box- the grass should grow up and cover any sign of the plastic liner- this works really well with moss too!!
Unless you want to keep a few after the wedding you don't have to feel bad about tossing or giving these away!!

I would check Ikea. Most of their boxes are made of birch plywood but I imagine staining them to your liking won't be too difficult.

I am doing the same thing for my friends wedding, we used this long narrow glass thing from ikea that we found in the vases section, its a rectangle with rounded corners. its white glass, not wood, but it looks great. unfortunately, I cant find it on their website to post a link but we also found a lot of other stuff there for wedding supplies that were way cheaper then the wedding supply shops.

I just bought this little guy last night for $4: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/60051299

Not sure if it's the right size for you and there is a divider but it might be fun to fill the large section with wheatgrass and the smaller with.. I don't know... dirt? pebbles? And the wood has a warm cherry sort of color which I bet would look great with the green.

I have been looking for something similar and came across rectangle and square wooden boxes at Ikea in the garden/vase department. I am guessing they are pretty new items since I have looked there before. Take a look, I hope these work for you.

I'd be really surprised if you can beat Jamali's prices for something like this.

This might be kind of odd, but have you thought about using the unfinished tissue box, like here:

You'd still have to stain them. And you'd use only ONE wheat grass bunch. So it would be a big savings.

we did wheat grass centerpieces and used these glossy white 5" x 2" containers from Jamali Garden and they looked spectacular. And at $42 for 12 containers I thought it couldn't be beat.

Great job. You found a great price and I have to say that I actually prefer the white ceramic to the wood.
