Giant Corpse Flower in Bloom at the UC Botanical Garden in Berkeley!

7-17-08-corpse2.jpg

As co-eds back in the day, we fulfilled a science requirement with an amazing entomology course. The "sex life" of the Giant Corpse flower was unmistakably one of the highlights of the class (show and tell with hissing cockroaches was a close second) and we've always wondered if the smell was as horrific as the flower's name implies...well now is the time to find out!

If you're itching for a truly jarring olfactory experience, you best skedaddle 'cause this baby is at the end of its cycle and that stench won't be around for much longer.

I've always heard it called by its genus name, Amorphophallus, which I find equally entertaining. I was not aware that it grew three inches a day. Fascinating.
