Favorite Design Magazine?

mag.gif

Is it Dwell, with its modern emphasis? House Beautiful with its short, useful articles? Elle Decor, with the longer features you can read over coffee? Or Living, Etc., that British stronghold? The launch of Lonny made us think...

...about the magazines that are out there for us now now that Domino is gone (blogger bias!). Which do you love and why? Which are are worth subscriptions?

Maybe you love a local magazine, such as Sunset, California Home & Design or Seattle Homes & Lifestyles? Despite the relative decline of magazine advertising and shelter titles, there's still quite a variety out there. Which gives you the most inspiration?

well, my heart is still with Domino, but I am a faithful reader of both Elle Decor and HB - though I often find the homes in HB a tad too traditional for my taste.

Domino and House & Garden were definitely my favourites, but I love Dwell too. Great writing, great ethos, great design.

However, I generally despise Elle Decor. So boring and urbane. Too many socialites and business tycoons. I will always prefer the quirky interiors of people with limited budgets, which is probably why I'm on AT every single day.

Country Living.

It's not what it used to be. It's awesome. Truly. Sort of a cross between Domino & Blueprint with a lot of DIY thrown in and the occasional recipe.

I love Living, Etc. It's always so fresh! Elle Decor is my absolute favorite, and I can't wait 'til it's delivered every month. House Beautiful has become WAY too traditional and farty. I'm not a fan of Dwell. It's too to the trade.

:( and I sure miss Domino.

Funny you ask this question as I have been thinking of getting a design mag subscription. I have the most love for Living Etc- but wont be subscribing cause its too pricey for US delivery. Elle Decor is always beautiful but most often out of reach in terms of sourcing items found in its pages. House Beautiful I usually love but every once in a while it will get too "country" or "french country" for my taste and then I will get annoyed. So I have some hesitancy about getting a subscription there. I have a subscription for Dwell which I will not renew because its way too spare and modernist for my taste.

I do miss Domino so! But, of the list above Dwell and Living ETC are favourites of mine purely because their aesthetic and style of writing appeals to me and my personal style.

That being said I do pick up the occasional Country living and recently came across a wonderful magazine in Australia called 'Australian Home Beautiful'.

I think any of them are completely worn out by month 6 or so. Same tastes, same ads, same sources, month after month. I got really sick of Dwell after I realized that it might all be trendy and industrial and (maybe) green, but it was all also ugly. Did House Beautiful for a while, but it was a cheapo production. Architectural Digest - pretentious beyond words.

The one that wore best for me was This Old House. But even with that, I realized that I was never going to a tenth of the projects.

Elle Decor is the absolute best! Beautiful and creative without being too stuffy. Also love House Beautiful... though recent issues have ticked me off. What is up with photographers draping a sweater or pair of pants across a bed before the shoot? I don't know why, but that annoys the poop out of me. They show these rooms that are pristine and organized beyond what is truly attainable, but then there's this article of clothing left behind as if to say, "This room really is lived in and not staged for the shoot." Does that annoy anyone else???

I don't think I have one favorite. Each one mentioned has something to offer but not one does it entirely like Domino did.

I rarely buy them anymore unless one issue is really worth while and inspires me or working on a specific project.

I find most of the interiors and products way out of my price range. Domino did such a good job at bringing affordable ideas and products to those that don't make 500,000 a year.

So if I am going to dream and get inspired I tend to go for the beautiful European magazines you need to get at a news stand. I miss my LA news stands, there are only a few good ones in San Francisco.

I really miss Domino. It did such a great job of covering so many different design styles and price points. I still have all the past issues and was flipping through them last weekend looking for kitchen inspiration. There really is nothing like Domino on the market now.

Oh my goodness.. great question, but my answer could go on forever because I get a little something from so many different ones, but in order of preference here goes:

Elle Decoration - British Edition
Elle Decoration - French Edition
Marie Claire Maison - France
Marie Claire Maison - Italy
Elle Decoration - Italy Edition
Living Etc.
Elle Decor
New York Spaces
Architectural Digest
World of Interiors

..ok, so basically all international Elle Decoration's, lol! Although, I have yet to get my hands on the German and South Africa editions.. but they are on my wish list!

I've had a subscription to Dwell and Metropolitan Homes for years now, I tend to flip through them quickly, tear some things out, and then I'm done with 'em.

I loved Dwell in its early days, but it has become way too elitist and architect-y. I'm expecting that bowl of pomegranates any day now.

There was a great subsidiary of BHG a few years ago called BHG-Home Ideas (or something similar) that was aimed at Gens X and Y. It was full of DIY projects and tours of spaces done on limited budgets. Sadly, it only lasted a few issues.

I'm a little late on the Domino mag train, since I picked up the last issue :(

But I've found Living Etc. as great inspiration (although it's a little pricey and most of the stuff is in the UK). Elle Decor is sort of dull, Dwell is too urban/modern and Canadian House & Home is like the little sister who hasn't quite got there. I usually go for LE and House Beautiful (which is a bit formal) since they have more ideas than the others.

I've been a long-time reader of ReadyMade but once again, it's MCM with touches of Indie-Eclectic. It's not that I hate these styles, it's just a little dull.

Honestly, I sometimes reference my Domino book but use AT as inspiration 99% of the time. I love seeing what people can do on a budget and there's a lot more creativity. Plus, the comments give me ideas and ways to think about decorating your home or a room. I know, it's free but I feel bad for the people in the publishing world but I just really love AT and what it's grown to :)

these days i only take House Beautiful.
the homes are way out of my budget, but i like the color features and reading the interviews with designers.

i was getting so many magazines and not having the time to read them. plus i was looking so much i would get overwhelmed about making a decision about my apartment. like i was waiting to see what new idea would be in next month's issue.

i think i want to start taking This Old House.
and that Budget Living book has been on my bedside table for the next couple of years. i love that book.

Now that Domino is gone, I would have to say World of Interiors is my favorite shelter mag. It is in a completely different vein, but still showcases unique and extraordinary spaces in a non-whitewashed way. Still pedigreed, I guess, but way more interesting than the bland urbanity of Elle Decor and the bland pretentiousness of Architectural Digest. If I lived in Sweden, I would be a Skona Hem devotee! But I can only admire from afar....

My favourite is Living Etc as well. Every month there are amazing ideas, the houses are fresh, lived in and inspiring. Dwell has lost me. Instead of being a 'green' magazine of change, it seems to have become nothing more than an elitist buttwipe. Dwell has pretty much ruined all things Eames, Mid Century and 'designer'. If i see another bloody Barcelona Chair or an Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman I'm going to gouge my eyes out. What about people who are making cool stuff NOW that will be the smart design of the future!? Anyway, I could go on about Dwell for ages.

And yes, Country Living is getting pretty good! Great ideas, and very green ideas I might add. You just have to flip through about 15 ads for geriatric medications to see it all. As soon as those terrible pharma ads go, they may be onto something.

Overall though, AT RULES! thanks for existing.

I am going to agree with 75% of the people in here and say "I miss Domino!" I was in New Zealand this spring and there was a great design mag that was lying on a table in a cafe. It was a cross between Domino and Dwell. I wish I could remember the name. If anyone does know please post it. I would also like to note that instead of my beloved Domino I receive Glamour Mag now. This is insulting on two levels. One, I have not read Glamour since I was 20. Second, they mentioned home decor in it which I have found none of. Moving on, I like Dwell but, it is very focused. It deals with a higher end of design. There are also a lot of trade advertisements. I also like Elle Decor but, find it severe at times. I will check out Country Living. Sigh....Domino......Sigh!

American mags in general tend to be a bit too boring and conservative. The worst, in my view, is Architectural Digest - too futzy with terrible photography and cluttered rooms often.

Give Metropolitan Home credit for having floorplans -- which I find endlessly fascinating. Elle Decor is aspirational but most houses/apts. shown do seem to have some personality and not be the decorator-ish sort found in Architectural Digest. If I could only take one magazine in the combined decor/food/garden category it would be Sunset -- not the strongest in any single category but well-rounded overall. Another regional candidate is Cottage Life -- not much on decor, although a fair amount of DIY and you DO have to do it yourself if you are on an island in the North Woods. This is a Canadian magazine which deserves a larger US distribution in the northern tier of States-- any place where seasonal housekeeping involves improvisation and less than the full range of city services.

a few months ago i swiped an oct 08 issue from the waiting room, and at home read every sentence cover to cover. it took me days to get thru. i'd seen it on the stands before, but never gave it a glance. but once i was able to see what it was all about i was a woman obsessed. i went online in a vehement tizzy to order FINALLY! THE GREATEST HOME INSPIRATION MAG! EVER! only to find out it was discontinued in march of this year. i was so damn mad! i've been meticulously cultivating a magazine subscription list for months, weeding out the impossibly unworthy. an arduous task, as any of you know. domino was like an epiphany, heaven-sent, an easy choice. now what to replace it with? to me, all of the others mentioned in this thread just cannot compare.
