We hate stores that make us feel frantic. We recently walked into a store and immediately made a U-turn right back outside because the loud music, the bright colors and the piles of products were just way too much. So when we come across shops like CANOE, located in downtown Portland, we put them on our list of regular haunts. The space feels so open (perhaps it's the large windows that provide a plethora of natural light), the goods are well-curated and you can actually have a relaxing shopping experience.

We've got no kids in our home, but were tempted to pick up one of these Pinocchios anyway. They're handmade in Italy from FSC-certified wood and non-toxic paint. Oh, and check out the lovely pennyround tiles along the windowsill!

We love that there's enough space between the store fixtures to walk around and take note of all the cool merchandise.

We've been fans of the J.Schatz egg birdfeeders for a while now. We are equally crazy about the way they're displayed here. (Notice the wood planks on the ceiling?)

Thankfully for those who don't live in Portland — or don't have the pleasure of frequenting the City of Roses — CANOE has an online shop as well.

Looks like a great place, but please look "plethora" up in the dictionary!

I can row a boat...Canoe?!

I have one of those little Pinocchios watching over my bar. I brought him back from Signa.

viola - We did. According to Merriam-Webster:

2: excess, superfluity; also : profusion, abundance

In this case, we're using it to mean an abundance.

Anh-minh: yes, abundance is the fourth definition there. But "plethora" is really for things that can be counted, and suggests excess -- as in: too much of something, and a bad thing.

It's like the difference between less and fewer. You can have less light, but not fewer light. You can have an abundance of light, but it sounds very odd (to this picky grammarian) to have a plethora of light.

A plethora of pillows? Much better. Many, verging on too much.

Sorry to be a pedant. This one's just a pet peeve of mine.

And I still like the look of this CANOE place, with its abundance of natural light!

I think one of the reasons I shop at Target instead of other box retailers is that they don't have piped in music or a paging system. It puts my mind at ease and I find it easier to shop in there, also stay in the store longer=spending more money. Harsh fluorescent or overly bright halogen lighting has the same effect.

I wish retailers would use the research out there about buying behaviours and what makes people want to spend money in their store. Paco Underhill has written a fantastic book about it called, Why We Buy.

add "too hot" to the list of reasons quit my shopping endeavors earlier than i'd like. it has been cold here in ptown and i'm not about to carry my heavy wool coat around on my arm when i'm shopping. the stores seem to be heated to room temp, making it VERY warm to move about and continue shopping in my winter garb, therefore i usually leave in a sweat, much sooner than i'd like.

also, i'd like retailers to put carts & baskets at the BACK of the store in addition to the front (or on the top floor if the main entrance is a lower level & vice versa). i often plan on going in for one or two things, then find other things i like, only to have to travel back downstairs (or to the front) to find a cart/basket. i sometimes just get frustrated and decide *not* to buy the extra items. retailers, are you listening to the calls of missed sales opportunities here?

(i won't even go into the unflattering lighting in some dressing rooms...)

I - LOVE - CANOE - !

The owner is a great guy and his collection is fantastic. I especially enjoy that some of the items in his shop are things you can't find anywhere else. I bought the most amazing metal chess set there. It's from Germany. In fact, there wasn't a word of English to be found on or in the package. It's a sleek piece of decor that I often get comments on.

Canoe is great. Check out their condom dispensers. I give them as gifts all the time and everyone loves them. Their staff is very friendly and helpful; everything arrived quickly and packaged in a cool manner.

Viola - Pedant, really? Such fustian writing. Perhaps, in the future, we should avoid such cavils.

Pompousness and arrogance tends to be my pet peeve.
