Nifty Fifties House in Forest Hills
SFGate

Forest Hills, a strange and lovely little neighborhood tucked in between West Portal and the Sunset, has always intrigued us. With its well-tended lawns, grand old cypresses and an unlikely mix of Tudor, Mediterranean, and ranch-style houses, the neighborhood has a distinctly suburban feel, and yet it's well within the city limits. We've always suspected there were some real gems hidden down the curves of its winding streets. Sure enough, one such gem just went on the market: A single-level 1950s home built in a style reminiscent of Frank Lloyd Wright...

Featured on SFGate this weekend, the Forest Hills home has been renovated in recent years, but still retains a great deal of its original charm. As SFGate points out, the architect must have been a devotee of Wright's, as many of these original features are characteristic of his work: clerestory windows, polished concrete floors, radiant heat, and smooth wood paneling.

The home's hefty price tag might make you groan, but the photos are worth checking out; the renovation is a great example of how a home's beautiful original details can be preserved even as other features are brought up-to-date.

Check out the Zephyr Real Estate web site to view a slideshow, or visit SFGate to read more about the home's history.

The SFGate comments are gold! "Whats with all the books? Too many...give them to a school or library."

The bedroom is amazing. I just don't get the Ligne Roset slug sofas...

I don't get the sofas either but people like them. They just creep me out. I love the amount of bookshelves but they are a little crowded.

Except for the New England wingback chair, this place is perfect for me. I love this architecture and these furnishings.

As for the books, I understand; you just keep bringing them in and then you have to find a place for them. I am in the process of clearing out my books and it is not easy to find people who want large numbers. I have a friend who will take all the paperbacks (of which I have fewer) so that she can trade them in at a used bookstore. The hardbacks have gone to a day center for people with emotional disabilities.

I think that the Chippendale Chairs give the place character and keep it from looking like another "DWR's Greatest Hits" decorating job.

The comments on that site are priceless. "It looks like IKEA threw up in here!" and the one about too many books... *sigh*

"a strange and lovely little neighborhood tucked in between West Portal and the Sunset..."

Isn't it actually "tucked" in the hills just above (and east east of) West Portal? That doesn't put it in between Wp and the Sunset IMO...

i kind of like the wingback chair. People who do all MCM furniture kind of weird me out - too matchy matchy for my taste.
