Recycled Carrier Bag Chair

...Carrier Bag meaning plastic grocery bag. We had to share this, even if it's not the cutest or most glamorous item we've ever come across. What it is, though, is an innovative way to turn landfill-guilt hoarding into function.

It also inspires us to think of using plastic bags as filling for other, perhaps less transparent, things, like floor pillows.

The best-case decor scenario for this chair, we think, is if it were in a room with almost nothing else in it, since the muted busy-ness of the bags would merge with and amplify any visual clutter in the room at all (as in the photo). But left to stand alone, we can stretch our brains to see it as a wry conversation piece. If we try very, very hard.

It comes unfilled, of course, and takes 2,000 plastic bags to fill to capacity.

my MIL brought back several leather poufs for me from Africa and i filled them with newspapers and shopping bags....when they start to seem flat, i just add more stuffing.

I've got two leather hassocks at home that have flattened out over the last couple of years. I was fed up with their sorry appearance just last week, and decided to try stuffing one of them with old, wadded-up plastic grocery bags from the bottom (leaving the original stuffing on top so they're still comfy and rounded out). It worked like a charm. I can't wait till I have enough plastic grocery bags left over to fill out the second hassock. It's almost like getting new furniture.

Sorry...but wouldn't this just encourage the use of plastic bags...in order to fill it up?

My cat's very favorite toy came home with her from the shelter. One night we discovered its carcass laying next to a plastic bag, which was apparently its stuffing (we managed to stitch it back up and "blue ball" is back in action). Someone had knitted and then felted a ball, and stuffed it with a Wegmans bag, and donated it to the shelter. Very cool recycling for a great cause!

My mom once put out a box at church to collect used (and washed) nylon stockings. It was amazing the amount that she collected from such a small community. She used them to stuff big floor pillows for us kids in the living room. They are the heaviest and warmest pillows ever! If I knew anyone of my generation who wore hose, I would collect them, too... thank heavens, bare legs are acceptable these days.
