Jason & Sarah's Candy Land Living Room
Room for Color - West #9

thumbs up

Name: Jason & Sarah
Location: Portland, Oregon
Type of Home: Single Family Home

Color Inspiration: We knew when we bought our house that our living room would be the focal point visually. When you open the front door you're standing in the living room so we wanted to make it feel immediately inviting and fun. We're both collectors at heart...

Give Jason & Sarah a THUMBS UP if you think this room belongs in the finals!

Candy Land

Color Inspiration continued: ...and with Sarah previously working in the toy industry and me being a graphic designer we are constantly finding things to draw color inspiration from. I think the two main things that draw your eye in this room are the skateboards and the custom cabinets, which we painted. The skateboards were for an art show I was a part of and the cabinets and shelving are something we designed based on modular shelving of the 60s and 70s. A big part of the color in this room is artwork made by friends including most of the pillows, framed art and vinyl toys.

Colors Used: We chose to leave our walls white, as everything else in the room explodes color. For our custom cabinets we used Rust-Oleum American Accents spray paint in Blossom White, Aqua, Sour Apple and Tangerine.

Color Tip: Take color cues from your life and what interests you, rather from color guides or interior design manuals. It makes it more personal and you'll find that if your surround yourself in colors that you love, it will make that 1 month old house feel like you've lived there for years.

I love that your using color in your accessories and furnishings instead of the walls. If your taste or mood change, then the colors can just as easily change too.

I love this room - it looks like a ton of fun...great job!

Makes me want to stand in front of the shelves and check out all the goodies in person!

I love this one too! I hate homes that are all stuffy with no fun aspect. This place is welcoming and warm. Thumbs up.

Very fun and playful. I just wish the wall arrangement over the sofa was about 6-8 inches lower.

I love this room so much. The only thing I would have done differently is to arrange the furniture so that the chairs are flanking the TV, making it more condusive to conversation rather than TV watching. Great job, though!

I think I see one of my plates on that wall shelf! Crazy!
This living room is like opening up a box of Crayola colors! Way to go Sarah & Jason Sturgill!

I love this room... can't understand why it's not winning the current head-to-head!
Although the shelves are busy, the minimal white walls and dark floor make it work, and the coloured cabinets really pull it all together. The quirkiness works, because it genuinely looks like a collection of loved things collected over the years, rather than a contrived collection of 'quirky' items from shops that specialise in 'Keep Calm...' posters and so on.
