Roundup: Extra-Deep Sheets

21909sheets1.jpgAbout a year ago we invested in a new mattress. It weighs so much that in order to turn it every six months, we need to call in a brigade of friends and feed them pizza for strength. But trust us—it’s heaven! The only issue we’ve had so far is finding fitted sheets deep enough to tuck over its super-bulky corners. In the interest of helping out those in similar predicaments, we’ve rounded up the results of our research…

Garnet Hill’s hemstitched percale sheets fit mattresses up to 15” tall. While this is considered officially “extra-deep,” it’s nowhere near deep enough for our big boy. The sheets are good quality, though, and compared to some, they’re pretty affordable. Prices range from $20 for a pillowcase to $65 for a king-size fitted sheet.

Pottery Barn sheets fit mattresses up to 18” deep, which will work for most pillow-tops. We’ve heard good things about their quality as well, but have never experienced them in person. They’ve got several organic cotton sets available too. Set prices range from $129 to $239, depending on size and thread count.

Most of Lands’ End’s sheets are designed to fit up to 22”-deep mattresses. We like solid-color sheets, but they come in a wide selection of preppy patterns too, if that’s your thing. Set prices range from $109.50 to $199.50 (for the highest-end bamboo/cotton king-size set).

The Company Store’s Charisma line fits mattresses up to 22” deep. Their Supima cotton line is also available in supersize (for 20”-deep mattresses). Prices for single items (not sold in sets) range from $40 to $180.

Luxury sheets from Macy's: Ralph Lauren and the Hotel Collection

For something luxurious, Macy’s carries these Ralph Lauren “Estate Sateen” sheets, which fit 21”-deep mattresses. The rich colors are nice, but they’re pricey: each piece will run around $100.

Finally, if your mattress is a gigantic cousin of our own, and you’re willing to spend $135 to $175 per sheet, Macy’s Hotel Collection extra-deep 600 thread count sheets fit mattresses up to 25 whole inches deep! Wow. Once the recession's over, we’ll never break a sweat trying to stretch that last corner around our mattress again.

I found Martha Stewart for Macy's was an affordable option (up to 18" deep, $50 or less) as well as the organic bamboo sheets sold at Target. But beware the Target sheets: they have a sateen finish that can look awful in the wrong color.

Lands' End may seem expensive - but everything they sell is unconditionally guaranteed and can be returned at any time, they'll send fabric swatches, and the ladies in their Wisconsin call center are some of the nicest people to deal with nowadays.

we typically buy the company store sheets, however, in recent seasons, their "standard percale" lines have been diminished and replaced by high-thread-count sateen lines which is not my fancy. boo. classic, crisp cotton sheets. yay!

I found Wamsutta sheets that say their 525 TC set fits up to 25" deep mattresses. I just ordered a set, so can't say anything about their actual quality.

$180 for a King set on Bed Bath & Beyond:

Single fitted sheets for $60 on Amazon (product description does not include the mattress depth)

The best we found, ones that didn't snap off the corners, are actually from Sealy. They have this genius elasticized top and bottom. Here's the link: https://www.sealybedding.com/sheets/everyday/bestfit330sh

Thank you thank you! My mattress is extra deep with a memory foam topper. It requires 22" inch deep sheets. I have found some in the past, but the set was something like $300. I'm also picky about my colors, and want my sheets to be maroon/burgandy.

I have always had a soft spot in my heart for Lands End. Thanks for sharing the 411 on the guarantee and call center, bepsf. I'd rather spend more on a quality product from a US company with good customer service.

A big THANK YOU for all the recommendations here! We've had the same problems with needing 18" fitted sheets so this is much appreciated.

Can anyone recommend extra deep sheets in jersey material? We have been looking for those for a long time -- so far, haven't found any to our satisfaction. Thanks.
