Round-up: Getting Ready for Spring

3-4-09 spring anticipation.jpg

A fresh spring home
We're anxiously awaiting the arrival of spring this year, which (finally!), is only a couple weeks away. Below are a few things we're doing to get ready, and some resources for the big spring clean...

We know it can be difficult to imagine spring is on it's way when there's still snow in some parts of the country, but believe it or not, there's only about 16 days left until the season officially changes. Here's what we'll be up to in the meantime:

  • Washing/Dry Cleaning our lighter blankets Maybe it's wishful thinking, but we want to have them ready to go when the moment comes to cast off our comforter.

  • Fertilizing We're not much of a green thumb, but we do know that now is the time to get some fertilizer to our dwarf citrus trees in order for them to bear fruit down the line.

  • Checking storage supplies We'll make a list of what we need for storing away winter coats, sweaters, blankets, etc. If we need anymore storage boxes, we'd rather get them now when they're readily available, than have to contend with all the other spring cleaners in a few weeks.

  • Cleaning window blinds and curtains In order to let in as much light as possible!

Let us know what you're doing in anticipation of spring.

The first post that made my truly happy today. Love the forsythia in the shot, love the daffodils I picked up at the store. Spring IS coming!

It's funny to read a post from San Francisco about longing for spring. When I was there last March there were all kinds of flowers in bloom and I barely needed a coat.

Here in New England we got a foot of snow this week (granted it will be warm this weekend and all wash away in a big rain). Someone told me they saw a snowdrop last week in a sunny spot before this last storm, but I haven't seen bare ground in my own yard for months.

Spring in Southern California means putting away my full-body wetsuit for the shorter version, even though I can't really do that until about June. The ocean is cold, and one must surf.

Usage Note: Anxious has a long history of use roughly as a synonym for eager, but many prefer that anxious be used only when its subject is worried or uneasy about the anticipated event. In the traditional view, one may say We are anxious to see the strike settled soon but not We are anxious to see the new show of British sculpture at the museum. Fifty-two percent of the Usage Panel rejects anxious in the latter sentence. But general adoption of anxious to mean "eager" is understandable, at least in colloquial discourse, since it provides a means of adding emotional urgency to an assertion. It implies that the subject so strongly desires a certain outcome that frustration of that desire will lead to unhappiness. In this way, it resembles the informal adjective dying in sentences such as I'm dying to see your new baby.

Thank you Flavio, grammar policeman.

Meanwhile, back at the subject of Spring -- The 15 inches of snow we got this weekend covered the little bit of lawn that finally appeared, and it's still buried. New yard, so nothing will be coming up there this year, and I eagerly await planting things for next year. Meanwhile, the supermarket tulips and hyacinths are calling my name...

I love that kitchen's orientation... I would be tempted to renovate my entire house just to have a kitchen sink in front of a window... (sigh).

Rucy- careful what you wish for! my kitchen sink is under a window that looks out straight onto my neighbours' porch. and they spend a lot of time on that porch... watching me do dishes. i don't want to put up curtains because it gets the most beautiful sunshine, so i just keep my head down and enjoy the warmth of the soapy water & sunshine without making eye contact!
