How To: Make an Alterna-Flor Rug

We stumbled on this cheerful quilt-of-a-carpet while reading Hatch.

It was created by a St Louis ceramicist who calls herself "idahostudios" on flickr and has an amazing sense of color. And because she did it on the cheap we thought it would be a great idea for SF readers struggling with the epic long hallways so common in our Victorian flats. So we asked her how she made it and she said...

I used to work at an architectural/interiors firm, and had access to extra samples, so that's where they came from- already cut- I didn't cut them. Put them together with duct tape on the back and voila. No adhesive or rubber coating, it just seemed to stay put for the most part.

A great resource to get cheap carpet scraps like this is SCRAP in San Francisco! It's a "creative reuse" center, which has a wealth of materials for creative types at very low prices. They accept donations as well. http://www.scrap-sf.org/

When I was a kid, my Dad carpeted the entire basement in rug samples. It looked very similar to this!
