Jonathan Adler's Marrakesh Rug...and Some Alternatives

1-9-08-sf-moroccan-rugs-2.jpg

With its green, ivory and dark blue color palette and large Moroccan motif, Jonathan Adler's new Marrakesh rug is the perfect rug for our living room, bar none. But the 8'x10' size we need is $1,695. So we went on a hunt for something similar but cheaper. Here's what we found:

It's surprisingly difficult to find a green rug in a modern Moroccan, Indian or Middle Eastern motif. West Elm's Morocco Windows rug in seaweed would be a close second to the Jonathan Adler, if West Elm still carried it:

But as they don't, the next contenders come from CB2 and Twinkle Living (via Design Public):

CB2's Morocco rug is $249 for 5'x8', and $449 for 8'x10'. Twinkle Living's Poker rug is not much cheaper than the coveted Jonathan Adler rug, but it offers a different and equally beautiful color palette at $1,344 for a 6'x8'.

Finally, two more rugs from West Elm deserve honorable mention:

The Batik rug is $119-$649 for sizes 2.5'x7'-9'x12', and the Taksim Tile rug is $99-$599 in the same range of sizes.

Those West Elm rugs turn up on eBay regularly. And I just saw this in a catalog: http://www.ballarddesigns.com/Rugs/By-Color/Green-Rugs/Sahar-Rug/p/7560?path=1%2C2%2C1466%2C1518%2C1623&iProductID=7560

Also, if you live near a CostPlus World Market, they carry a rug just like the new orange/gray from West Elm in natural/brown and natural green: http://flickr.com/photos/63122153@N00/393255981/in/set-72157594409118468/

I bought the green one (although, I frequently consider the CB2).

While more floral and not so Morroccan-inspired, Pottery Barn's new Bridget rug could play in this sand box:

I agree with Pixie! It's nice to find home furnishings that don't cost a 2nd mortgage =]

I looked at Adler's rugs and some alternatives mentioned above. The lesser versions look great in a photograph, in person the Adler rug is a much better quality with subtle color. I think I will save up for the real deal.

I feel like the west elm ones are not a great alternative because they are essentially the thickness of a placemat. Probably why they show up on Ebay a lot. For the quality, the Adler rug is actually quite reasonably priced.

Speaking of Adler, if anyone wants a laugh, the "Ask Jonathan" page on his website is a hoot . . . http://www.jonathanadler.com/shop/askjonathan.php

In Islam, green is strongly associated with the prophet Mohammed, which is at least part of the reason it's hard to find rugs with middle eastern, etc. motifs in green.
