SF Event: The Dwell NextHouse: Silicon Valley

3-24-dwell.jpgOn our calendar for this week: The opening of the Dwell NextHouse: Silicon Valley. According to Dwell, the home's modern aesthetic is teasing out issues among neighbors and fellow Mountain View residents around the timelessness of modern architecture and how new forms of building will be accepted and integrated into the community's fabric. Offhand we can't picture any other modern homes in downtown Mountain View, so we're excited to see what the response to the modern prefab NextHouse will be.

Mark & Ellen Siminoff bought a house and lot in Mountain View, fully intending to remodel the 1908 Craftsman. However, the high cost of renovation and the desire for more space to accommodate their growing family ultimately led them to look at a ground-up rebuild. That led them to prefab homes, and then to the Dwell NextHouse by Empyrean.

The prefab home the Siminoffs built working with Dwell, Empyrean, and designer Joel Turkel used responsibly harvested products as much as possible. The wooden house is designed to accommodate natural light, solar orientation, seasonal shading from vegetation, prevailing wind movement and many other influences and is designed to contribute to passive heating and cooling.

Click here to read more, and here to register to attend the Open House this coming Saturday and Sunday, March 29-30.

(Full disclosure: The interior designer on the project is one of our newest bloggers, Sally Kuchar.)

I thought the Dwell Houses were supposed to be Prefab?

The Empyrian houses are just pre-cut kits - nothing is preassembled in the factory unless you count those floor trusses as "preassembled"...

Is there a reason for almost no pictures of the finished home?

Good for them! Mountain View could use a little shaking up.

What??? Of course this is a prefab... ALL of the walls and shear panels were built in a factory in then flat-packed and shipped to the site where they were erected. Yes, the floor trusses were pre-fabricated too.
