7-1-08modernartifactsmain.jpgmodernart.pngModern Artifacts is a postwar art & design shop located on Market Street in (or near) Hayes Valley. The store's owner has been collecting and refurbishing mostly mid-century modern vintage furniture, art and home accessories for a little over 20 years. Lots of rosewood and teak tables and credenzas, brightly colored Knoll upholstered sofas, Bauhaus-esque table lamps... you get the picture (or if not, check out the photos after the jump!). But our favorite part? The prices are almost always less than the other vintage shops in the immediate area.

In addition to the inventory on the street level, Modern Artifacts also has a loft space that houses more furniture. On our visit there was an abundance of great looking and practical seating, both for dining and lounging.

7-1-08modernartifactsext1.jpgThe shop is laid out in such a way that most of the furnishings are divided into smallish "living rooms," which we think help people visualize what certain pieces might look like in their home.

7-1-08modernartifactsext2.jpgIn addition to a great selection of home furnishings and accessories, Modern Artifacts also boosts an impressive collection of great art.

I love that black chair in the last picture, anyone know who made (hopefully still makes) it?

That shop is on the wrong side of Market to be in Hayes Valley.

The store is so expensive! Pretty much if you're working-class or not a rich student, the prices are just too high. The pieces are beautiful, but it's just a store I or most people I know couldn't afford.
