6-25-08propmain.jpg6-25-08propname.jpgThe name 'Propeller' was picked for this Hayes Valley store because a propeller is a "perfect example of form beautifully following function - it moves things forward." We couldn't agree more with the affiliation. We've been visiting Propeller since it opened and it has consistently been jam packed with all sorts of fresh, practical goodies. And the classics? Forget it. While the store's owner and buyer loves Eames and Saarinen, he still thinks there are loads of talented modern designers getting started now, and wanted to give them a platform in San Francisco, a city saturated in shops that only peddle mid-century modern wares.

What we like most about Propeller is that you can find literally anything here. They don't stick to strictly furnishings or tabletop, gifty items.

6-25-08propext1.jpgA theme we consistently see at Propeller is the play on woods and wood stains. A lot of the wooden products are manufactured in non-traditional ways. Bending in ways you haven't seen before... mixing a lot of different types of woods (see above side tables), etc.

6-25-08propext2.jpgAnother thing we consistently see at Propeller are hanging mobiles. A lot of 'em. And they're always changing. We did not know that this many cool mobiles were being produced.

6-25-08propext5.jpgLastly, all of the pieces in Propeller are either designed or produced in North America.

Fair warning: I had a very unpleasant customer service experience at Propeller. Buyer Beware.

Cycloc only works if the top bar of your bike is near-horizontal or if you don't mind your bike hanging at an extreme angle.

I have bought stuff from Propeller and had a great experience every time! They were recently named Best Furniture Shop in SF for 2008 by the Chronicle.

Likewise, I had a very, very unpleasant customer service experience at Propeller. Nice as the store looks, there is no way I will ever set foot in there again.

Its sad that this is the only store like this in SF, lots of room for more furniture stores that could have cool things and down to earth prices plus good customer care. I have always been less than thrilled with Propeller and their offering is boring.
