Craigslist: The Source For Dinnerware That Keeps On Giving

120208-dishes.jpg Around our house we like plates. Some people like plants or tea cups.... we like plates. Plain plates (boring, we know!). We like plates so much we happen to have 165 place settings on hand for any party that might come our way. Click through the jump to see how this magnitude of tableware came into our possession for a steal of a deal and what to keep your eye out for in order to have the same luck!

A few years ago we came across a Craigslist posting from a woman who had decided that instead of renting dinnerware for her wedding, she would just buy it all from IKEA and then take a stab at reselling it. We just happened to be the suckers who snatched up all that she had to offer and we currently have place settings for 165 people. No paper plates at our house!

Our original purchase also included silverware, cups and mugs, but we donated those to our local church as it was just too much to store. But the plates we kept. After moving twice (that's a ton...literally... of dishes to move!) we came close to reselling them, but we figure we can silkscreen them up as Christmas presents before it comes to that.
For now we love knowing we never have to pick up plates for our parties. There is just something satisfactory about the tactile experience of eating off a real plate. It's a good thing.

So next time you're cruising Craigslist, don't be afraid of bulk purchases, they can yield great rewards!

I think I'd have donated the plates too - you never know when the church is going to have one of it's Spaghetti Fundraisers...

Have you ever had an event where you used all these?

Not sure about this....great to have plates, but that many? If you use them, fine, but just to have it?? I don't want to sound mean or anything but this just puzzled me.

I collect a lot of china, but when I get bored, I either put it on eBay or sell it to Replacements, Inc. But what's the point of having a lot of cheap dishes?

I understand this, i at one point had 75 champagne flutes... my space will really only fit 30 people so now i only have 50. I do a champagne toast at my NYE party and while solo cups are fine for beer i love my inexpensive ikea flutes for allowing me to at least do the champagne right. Also, flutes get broken ...extras are nice.

lots of dishes = cleaning lots of dishes. I hope you have a dish washer!

And the luxury of not having to wash a dish for 5 months.

Is it worth it to you to move these plates? Do you often need that many plates? How did you justify the room to store just the plates instead of keeping x many place settings complete and donating the remainder instead? Q1: Are you Greek? B:I think it might be fun to have a lot of a lot of cheap IKEA plates if I had a husband I was always mad at. Who wants a silkscreened IKEA plate for Xmas, is that one of those things that's just so darned quirky and personal, or could it be I never knew I wanted one until I receive it as a gift?

I'm not against owning bulk amounts of things that get used, but I wouldn't encourage people to overstock themselves because they just can't say no to a huge quantity of place settings. Kind of pack-ratty to do so unless you're throwing a lot of big parties.

When I used to cook at a catering company, some of our clients would do this. They would just buy everything they needed for their event and turn around and sell it all for the same price. It would just keep going and going and nobody ended up paying anything!

My best friends purchased dinnerware for their wedding at IKEA as well. They gave me 6 sets of each when I moved away, and have kept them ever since. Wedding rental = extortion.

this is supreme clutter. Unless you've thrown your own wedding, you've never used all at once. Having them "just in case" or waiting for a time to silkscreen them is exactly what AT preaches against. I don't really care, but seriously, having so many plates isn't something to write about.

I would be so tempted to do that same and think it is a great idea for weddings.

If you do want to sell them or if you are in the market to buy items like this, check out http://www.bravobride.com It is a site where you can buy used items for weddings or large event and/or sell the items afterwards.

I understand the bulk purchase idea as I come from a really large family. I have about 2 dozen dinner plates in my china pattern as they are fairly inexpensive. I have used nearly all of them within a single day so I see it as a worthy purchase for me. The other thing I bought once bulk was 3 tiered servers. I throw a lot of tea parties and often help at charity tea parties. I bought 12 3 tiered servers that were used at a wedding. I had enough to give 1/2 away as gifts to all of my sisters and girlfriends. I have 6 left that I lend out about every other month for people to use for buffets, weddings, tea parties or other events as needed. For the price I paid of $1 each I have more than got our money's worth.

i love this! i do the same thing (mostly with plates) except i like to mix and match, so i buy my stuff from goodwill. the problem is that now that i live in boston, i need a ride to and from the store (moving weekend, taking the T home with an armload of porcelain was not one of my better moments). still, you find some of the most amazing stuff and for me, as long as it's white and makes me smile for some reason, it's in.

Now I don't feel so bad keeping the dozen or so centerpiece containers from my wedding!
