We've written about how great stools are because they not only take up less physical space than chairs, they take up less visual space. Well, we love benches for the same reason.

The only drawback is that they're not very comfortable for a long period of time...

They're also not practical for larger tables - any more than two people on a bench and the center person has to climb over or get one of the other two to get up - besides the fact that all sitters need to coordinate their actions in sitting down and standing up.
IMO - Having guests over is all about looking after their comfort, and this type of seating is anything but comfortable.

and what is the purpose of the rugs under the dining tables? maybe they look good but aren't they a roaches' feeder as they collect all the crumbs and such?

Benches at a dining table scream "Hurry up and eat."

Dining room benches are great for kids. They are usually not sitting there long enough to complain:-)

Benches are just not as practical as they look. It's one of those "alternatives" that should not be considered seriously.

I hate benches. They are so uncomfortable. Though they may make a good foot rest for those on the opposite side of the table.

benches are uncomfortable if you're a slouch. they ARE good for kids because they help form good posture.
