3-10-08-area-51-logo.jpgArea 51 is probably one of the first mid-century inspired modern home stores we ever drooled over when they opened 10 years ago, when our interest in home decor was still nascent. Partly to blame are the enormous store front windows facing Pine Street, looking in on a cavernous converted warehouse space.

The store carries a wide selection of upholstered pieces, all with customizable fabric. If you don't mind off-brands, you can find reproductions of iconic pieces like the Eames Management Chair, various stools and the like. At prices much friendlier than the originals.

Ceramics by Jonathan Adler are joined by sculptural and wall art by local artists, like the Amplifier Worship(er) work by Garek Druss. The (again, fabulous) warehouse space is host to periodic openings and events.

Area 51 recently expanded into the adjacent space, and the black walls and concrete floors show off a selection of driftwood pieces, part of Area 51's growing focus on sustainable furniture.

I was there on my last trip to Seattle - the salesmen are nice, and there's a fairly reasonable selection tho I noticed that many pieces are standard EQ3.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE this store! It's painful to drive by when I know that I can't stop in.

Their sofas are cute, but way too firm, and honestly, uncomfortable. They didn't feel like they would age well with repeated use. I like the tailored and buttoned-up look, and have been on the lookout for petite sofas that would suit a small apartment and be comfortable to sit on...but these just aren't it. Mitchell and Gold, down near Pioneer Square, had a much better selection, for not too much more money.

I LOVED the acanthus mirrors, though. Ooooh! Oooh!

PS: Can we have an AT Seattle now? Please? Pretty please??

Awesome! It's nice to see a Seattle store featured on AT. Area 51 is always the place to go BEFORE you head to the downtown furniture store. They are friendly, love answering questions.

Surely an "AT:SEA" tab is just around the corner, eh?

just kidding... Even with all the (over)growth of condominium properties here, it will probably take another couple years before we can hold our own on AT.

Has Velocity (the Seattle store itself) been featured before? I know the online store has been referenced many times, but I haven't seen anything about the brick & mortar store.

You should continue on this Seattle string and also feature Velocity's new diggs. OH! and Chartreuse! Chartreuse is 60's/70's mod, and the owner is a real sweetheart.

ArtsandLetters - join the SF Spring Cure! I'm the only Seattlelite registered - it would be fun to have someone else in my city participating.

Three cheers for the nascent at:sea blog...or at least the at:nw blog to incorporate our brothers and sisters in Portland and both Vancouvers.

Oh, I love Area 51. I live just around the corner and walk by it almost every day--slowly, so as to maximize drooling time. Too bad the tweedy sofa currently in the window is out of my reach, sigh.

And nikkicole, I'm going to sign up, too, so that's two of us.
