Our first San Francisco apartment boasted a massive metal security gate. We never loved it, but found it a comfort when our apartment front-door lock was out of commission for way too long. We just wished the gate didn't have to be soooo ugly and mean looking.

That's beautiful!
Reminds me of the Lawrence Welk Show!

Can't you stick your hand through one of the circles and turn the knob on the other side? Maybe it's some other mechanism...

Love to put it on my Balcony anyone can climb into it the way it is now. This is really great as it let's the light and breeze in while keeping the bad out.

The security gates are quite nice... Too bad the area behind it is so unattractive... There is no reason to secure it.

Ha! I think I know exactly where these are. Would they be in Oakland near 8th Avenue? If so, they were constructed by the artist, Mario Carillo, who also worked for the Oakland Museum. He created the tile mosaics that are part of the same live/work complex too.

I love the old iron security gates around SF. Some of them are quite spectacular.

Lol. Anyone from Russia or other ex-USSR countries here? We've been using these for YEARS and they were not associated with anything chic.
