We mentioned last week how our music space is shrinking at about the same rate as the ice caps. We'd like to beef it up, but frankly we'd rather not look at those black nylon CD books, and jewel cases just collect dust. These CD albums are much more appealing...
And come in a bunch of different colors. Only negatives? They hold only 12 CDs and cost $22 a pop, so we'd probably just use one or two of them for whatever current favorites we need close at hand.

Its cheaper/simpler to just stash the CD's in a drawer arranged title-end up.

I bought cd sleeves at container store and put them into giant pretty fabric bound binders. you can get about a hundred cds into one.

While I work with Kolo products at work, they're nothing special. They have great colors and it's nice that you can get expansion posts, it's acid free... yadda yadda.
For storage though? I think I'll try both of the comments above:) It's a heck of a lot better than just holding 12cds.
Thanks for the tips!

bikenyc's idea is actually kind of awesome-er really. A nicely sized (not just 22 cds for fu*c's sake!) coffe-table "book" binder that looks like a photo album on the outside. That way it's still handy, but doesn't scream "mismatched, un-necesary album covers!"

$22 to hold 12? Absurd. Buy the West Elm CD binders - just as good looking and they hold 96 CDs. I looked high and low for fashionable CD binders and West Elm was absolutely the only source. Kolo has got the right idea - there should be more options out there - but they haven't quite got the right product.

You can get cd pages even cheaper at Fry's or Best Buy to put in 3-6 ring binders.

I moved my CD collection into 3-ring binders several years ago and am so glad I did! They're still heavy to move, but take up so much less space! My collection of 900 CDs (that hasn't physically grown since I got addicted to iTunes) fits into 9-ish binders that are all currently sitting in storage (since everything's on the computer now). The sad day was when I had the garbage full of all those jewel cases.
Before promoting this idea too much, I'd like to know if anyone has any good recycling ideas for the jewel cases.
Bikenyc - where did you get your fabric-covered binders? Mine are just in regular plastic-y ones, and they're not too pretty, and if I ever want to bring them out of storage they'll have to gain something in the aesthetics department (which the Kolo ones definitely have going for them).

i LOVE kolo's look, but it's way too expensive.

That's an idea, I KNOW for a fact there are very pretty 3 ring folders out there, even some that look like they're covered in fabric like the Kolo ones above. Target has them in their "nicer" office supply stuff.

A question for folks who store CDs in binders: What do you do with the booklets? I could part with the jewel cases and tray cards, but not the booklets. My experience with CD binder pages years ago is that the slots are too small to hold the booklets. Is that still true? Is there a brand sized to hold booklets as well as CDs?

I sold over 300 CDs at our garage sale after importing all of them into our iMac (well, at least the ones we wanted...we didn't save Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch.) Now I just back up my whole iTunes library to DVD. No messy storage issues and I made 500 bucks selling the CDs!

And now you longer own the rights to the music in your Itunes/DVD.

love the look of them, too bad about the stingy size and too high price.

JefferyK - I store the booklets next to the CDs in the binder pages. It's a tight fit, but it works. I put them in the "outside" slot with the CD in the "center" slot, which means I can more easily flip through the binder and recognize which CD is which.
Of course, it means that you'll need twice as many binder pages as you thought you would, since one page will only hold 4 CDs instead of 8.
