Faced with an eternal construction zone, Sarah and Joe of
House & Fig, decided to go one step further than the usual temporary storage solution of living out of suitcases and moving boxes. They found themselves some nifty wine boxes and got to town...
Cheap, creative and a mighty fine solution to the frustration of transitional clutter, wouldn't you say? So fine, in fact, that we could see this as a permanent shelving solution in a modern or minimal kitchen.

for those of you in sf, i used to work at juicey lucy's juice bar in north beach (it recently closed, how sad), and one of my favorite decor choices in there were the wine boxes on the wall that acted as bookshelves. does anyone in nyc know of a liquor store that might have (and part) with these?

I wish I weren't so intimidated by power tools... I would kill to be able to make something like this.

This is a great idea! I'm so excited to do this in my dining room

Nice contrast against all the stainless steel/white enamel.
How do you cajole wine merchants out of wine crates? I've wanted some for years...

Go around to local liquor/wine stores. Some stores (especially higher-end stores) still receive some wine in wood crates. Some stores are willing to part with them, others aren't. I found one in DC that regularly puts them outside their store whenever they're done with them, allowing anybody who wants them to take them. I make one or two trips a week out to the store on my xtracycle, snagging anywhere from zero to six at a time.
I'd be happy to share which store it is, now that I've collected enough for my bookshelf, for anybody in DC.

Schneider's on Capitol Hill. Look for them near or on top of the outdoor refrigerator (freezer?) unit on the south side of the building.
