Etsy Find: Bone China Shelf by Ricochet Studio

9-29-08 china shelf 1.jpgPlain white shelves are a design staple, and they are great for taking a back seat while the art or books on top do the talking. But there's something to be said for adding a point of interest to a usually mundane functional piece, and this shelf does just that.

9-29-08 china shelf.jpgIt is cast entirely of bone china, and the f-clamp actually works, allowing you to add or subtract books at your will. Needless to say, the price is steeper than your average Ikea shelves, but with this level of craftsmanship and artistry, it is worth it.

craftsmanship and artistry? for something that looks like you grabbed an old wood block, a clamp, and painted it white? You guys will put ANYTHING up here and say "look how great!"

I actually do think it looks great but I don't believe it would last a year. Just looking at it fills me with apprehension.

Interesting that the books are all from the library... don't know why it's interesting, but it is.

I can't think of anything positive to say about it, so I'll just not say anything.

So I was thinking....was it worth $650 enough for you to buy one? Or if we went into your house would we be more likely to find Ikea shelving because maybe...it wasn't worth it?

I'm still cracking up over the assertion that a small shelf that looks like it was made of found objects is worth my rent payment :)

Unusual, but really I think that is the best one can say of this piece. It seems highly ineffective, especially considering the cost. In this case- "Form follows function"!

I think it's a beautiful example of artistry, craftsmanship, and technical skill. Doesn't it serve functionally but also as an art piece? Considering the work that must have gone into making this out of porcelain, I think it's well worth the price-tag. I don't really think you can justly compare it to the cheap, off-gassing particleboard alternative.

Sorry, but reinventing the wheel is still reinventing the wheel...even if you made said wheel out of bone porcelain instead of stone. Just because it took a lot of work to recreate something that has already been created doesn't make it artistry or craftsmanship..it makes it insanity.
