Flybrary Bookshelf at Umbra

4-11-flybrary.jpgWe couldn't bring ourselves to do this to our books, but perhaps you're more blase about them than we are. Check out the way Canadian House & Home made Umbra's Flybrary Bookshelf into a bedside table below the jump...

We like the way the tray with a clock and other bedside accoutrements softens the powder-coated metal wall-mounted shelf.

$26.50 at Umbra.

I love this! I think it would be great for some of those 'outbox' books !!

Is it wide enough to use as a magazine rack?

Such a good idea - just get some thrift store books you'll never read...

Current design pet peeve: The floating book shelf. Why? For the mystery of it?

Beware that all your books need to be the same size (rather thick and moderate in length) to give the desired effect. It's amazing how many different lengths books are. Also placing them low on a wall looks better than higher where you don't get the effect of seeing the colorful spines and instead end up seeing the bland tail or top edges of the books. Hardcovers are a must as paperbacks don't fall flat on this shelf. If the books are no the correct thickness, you will have unsightly gaps between books...

In other words, it's hard to get it to look like in the promotional photos...

and notice how the first book "The Keyboard Mystery" is either printed upside down, backwards, or (more likely) faked for the promo pic.

Does anyone have this? I'm curious about whether it would damage the books at all. Regardless I think I'm in love with it.

Yes, I have some. I would not put valuable books on it but otherwise it doesn't damage fairly new books in good condition. Books in questionable condition don't look good on this thing anyway...

I like it! My husband has dozens and dozens of little Japanese books that won't fit in his nightstand anymore. Thanks for a solution!
