The tops of these steps, which lead up to a sleeping platform, are hinged so that items can be stored inside. (The platform actually allows for tons of storage. The cupboard to the right with the open door? It has "cable car" drawers for more stowing of one's stuff. And there's a desk and large drawers on the side of the whole unit.)
More information about the great -- and very white -- New York apartment is here.
This is almost exactly what I want. Since there is no store listing/price does one assume that this is custom-built? (and therefore out of my price range...)
I wish some one would manufacture this in component form at a realistic pricepoint.

This is wonderful. Thanks for posting it. I really like how the bedroom feels separate, yet it's still open to the rest of the apartment. This is so much better than if the bed were simply placed on the floor.

I just saw that episode too! I'm so behind on TiVo. The owner of that apartment struck me as a little... anal, and the minimalist white isn't for me. I love the lofty look of the "bedroom" regardless.
