It's a match made in modern furniture heaven. Hip Bay Area designer Thomas Wold has two pieces for sale at one of our favorite hip San Francisco shops, Propeller. You already know we love his Block Party pieces (jump below for our posts), but we're also digging his Plaid Console/Credenza.
Thomas says, The Plaid Console/Credenza was inspired by woven plaid fabric and graphic packaging. I wanted to use traditional veneer marquetry techniques to create the plaid graphic, but instead of using wood veneers I used solid colored laminate. In the eye the solid colors seem to mix when overlapped the same way it appears with woven plaid fabric. The shape of the console is a hint to mid-century designer like Robin Day's boxy clean shapes. Also, adding solid wood touches helps feel like furniture from that time period. The graphic plaid shell though, pushes the feeling more to the future.

It kind of takes us back to our Saarinen-Table-and-Laurel-Lamped childhood. In a good way, of course.

would have been nice if he had used wood veneers. As it is it looks cheap and dated. Those colours should have stayed in the 60's and 70's.

In a similar vein, I like this striped dresser from William-Sonoma Home, but I'm in shock at the $4,500 price tag.

Does anyone know of a similar piece at a much lower price? Even if it was half the price I'd look at it.
The things I like about it are the drawers (vs. shelves and doors), the shape (clean lines, the open space underneath between the legs) and the striped stain.
