Sophia 30 Credenza

2007_02_09_sophia.jpgMost people, ourselves included, store their clothes in dresser drawers. Others --including, ahem, someone we live with and love dearly-- prefer them stacked on open shelves, for easy scanning.

After accomodating this preference and living for a year with open clothing storage in our bedroom, we've decided that it is exclusively for people with OCD -- or for Gap employees with time on their hands. (Hmm, maybe this is Gap's problem!) Keeping those shelves orderly enough so that we can stand to look at them first thing in the morning takes time, time that we'd rather spend doing. . . almost anything else.

We racked our brains for a solution to our bedroom conflict and arrived at the idea of a credenza, like the ones generally found in diningrooms. With a credenza, clothing can still be stored in easy-to-scan stacks, but if those stacks devolve into unruly piles they will be behind closed doors.

David Pierce of Ohio Design makes a beautiful, well-scaled credenza, the Sophia 30. The grain-matched cabinet comes in oak, walnut, or maple and has adjustable shelves, and both the under-cabinet supports and the legs are made of steel. It looks built to last-- and hopefully to settle our storage dispute.

$945 by special order. Info on David's site.

That's beautiful. I got inspired to get a dredenza because of SFGirlbybay's post the other day, but realized I needed a small one and hadn't seen any. Has anyone seen this style locally, and more affordable?

Hi Shannon. OHIO Design is actually here in SF. Check out their website: http://www.ohiodesign.com/

Sorry, I meant that in reverse--more affordable AND local. I know Ohio design is local, but I can't spend over 900 bones on this...

I am a BIG admirer of Ohio Design's work. The Sophia 30 is no exception and quite handsome. However, I, too, would like something similar that isn't above $500.00. I know, that's a tall order. I want it for my entry hall. Since I won't see it much and it's only "to look at" I don't want to spend big bucks. I LOVE the original Florence Knoll Two Position credenza, but authentic replicas start at $2100. Ebay's mid-century pieces are not cheap either (I've been searching for months!). Anyone know of an interesting MODERN credenza/sideboard that's only 36" to 40" in length? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Pssst! Gary! I was at The Other Shop on Divis yesterday, and they had a narrow-ish Danish credenza in fantastic condition. It was the stuff vintage dreams are made of. It was wider than the Ohio design, but under 40". It was 325 or 375--and beautiful in person. I couldn't get it, but I had to pass on the treasure...
