Finally. Ages ago we slinked to THE THING, and we've wondered what was in Issue #1. Now, thanks to Lauren and Derek, we know: A silkscreened window shade by Miranda July. Via: Smarts & Crafts

Qua? I love me some Miranda July, but what's with the comic-sans-y font? Didn't the design nation come together to ban ole' CS?

That's not even CLOSE to the comic-sans font. Plus, this is one of those cases when if someone did it sporadically, it'd be crazy but since it's mass produced it's quirky and fun! Stupid.

Dj, honey, I work with fonts all damn day long, so I know a puffy Comic Sans-cousin when I see it.

I like Miranda July. A lot. I loved both Me You and Everyone We Know and No One Belongs Here More Than You. A lot. But if this is indeed meant to be mass produced, I don't really know if this is the product she should get behind. I love her dark, longing, slightly creepy prose, but mayhap not on a shade in a comic-sans-like font.

I agree that this font is not my favorite. While I think that the shade will get recognition (as in, since this is a limited-edition/subscriber designer thing, other people into design will see this in people's spaces and infer a knowledge of design) the object by itself is not attractive or very desirable to me.

It's not a font, it's her handwriting. She made a master and then it was shot onto a screen.

Fair enough. Amended statement:

"This handwriting is not my favorite. While I think the shade will get recognition, the object itself is not attractive or very desirable to me."

Greenjeans is right. This is hand lettering, not a typeface — which you can clearly tell by examining the alternates of a single character. Every G and S is unique, though obviously from the same hand. And I think this treatment is perfectly appropriate for this application; the whole point is for it to look like it's been scrawled directly on the blind, not typeset by a designer!

It would be cuter in a show room or shop than a home. I think the first time or two pulling it down it would be cute, but after the 100th, it would drive me crazy.

There were two shades produced. The other one says "if this shade is down I am not who you think I am." It's on our front door and I think the neighbors are now scared of us.

I got the "tears streaming down my face" one, and tossed it immediately into my "regift" box. I love Miranda July, but I don't love my first Thing. I hope the next Thing is much better.

Oh well, it was a gamble.
